How to Replace the Starter on a 2002 Camry

The starter on the 2002 Toyota Camry is a cylindrical piece located on the lower part of the engine on the drivers side of the vehicle. Its positioned between the transmission and transmission cross member and is bolted to the bell housing. The starter is responsible for the initial cranking power needed to turn the engines pistons.

Instructions

    1

    Remove the negative battery cable connector from the battery with a crescent wrench. This cuts off power to the Camrys starter.

    2

    Remove the wiring harness from the starter solenoid by pulling the wire connector off the male connector on the solenoid.

    3

    Disconnect the black grounding wire from the side of the starter by removing the bolt with a crescent wrench.

    4

    Remove the three bolts that secure the starter to the bell housing with a 9/16 socket.

    5

    Pull the old starter out of the bell housing and then place the new starter into the bell housing.

    6

    Bolt the starter in place.

    7

    Reconnect the ground wire to the side of the Camrys starter.

    8

    Reconnect the starter solenoid wiring harness.

    9

    Reconnect the negative battery cable.

You can install a billet grille on your 2002 Camaro right from home with a few tools that can be purchased from any hardware store if you dont already have them on hand. The Chevy Camaro was introduced in the 1967 model-year to compete with the Ford Mustang. A billet grille has slats in it in order to allow air and moisture to circulate while at the same time protecting the radiator from damage by rocks and other debris. Remove the old grille first then follow these directions to install the billet grille.

    Lift up the hood of your Camaro and prop it open with the safety bar.

    Ask a helper to hold the billet grille on the front of the vehicle while you attach the bolts through the holes with a socket and ratchet.

    Lower the hood of your car.

How to Replace the Timing Belt on a Lexus 2002 GS 300

The Lexus GS is a mid-size luxury sedan that has been in production since 1993. The 2002 model is a second generation Lexus, which includes the 1997 through 2005 models. The 2002 Lexus GS 300 has a six-cylinder 3.0-liter engine with a double overhead camshaft. This type of engine uses a timing belt to synchronize the rotations of the crankshaft and camshaft. The timing belt should last at least 60,000 miles before requiring replacement.

Instructions

    1

    Remove any components needed to access the upper timing belt cover. Disconnect the eight mounting bolts on the upper timing belt cover with a socket wrench and remove the upper cover.

    2

    Turn the crankshaft clockwise with a hex wrench to align the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley with the timing mark on the crankcase. The timing marks on the camshaft pulleys must also align with the timing marks on the lower timing cover.

    3

    Disconnect the timing belt tensioner and its dust cover with a socket wrench. Remove the lower timing belt covers and the guide for the timing belt. Rotate the pulley for the right camshaft clockwise slightly to relieve the tension on the timing belt, and detach the timing belt from its pulleys.

    4

    Replace the lower timing cover and fasten its mounting bolts with a socket wrench. Turn the right camshaft pulley clockwise to align its timing mark with the corresponding timing mark on the lower timing belt cover. Turn the left camshaft pulley clockwise to align its timing mark.

    Place the new timing belt onto the crankshaft pulley. Align its installation mark with the edge of the lower timing belt cover.

    6

    Place the timing belt on the left camshaft pulley and align the left camshaft timing mark on the timing belt with the timing mark on the left camshaft. Align the timing mark on the left camshaft with its corresponding mark on the lower timing belt cover. Repeat this step with the right camshaft.

    7

    Place a plate washer between the engine block and the timing belt tensioner. Press the push rod for the tensioner into its housing to align the hole in the push rod with the hole in the housing. Insert a 0.05 inch Allen wrench into the holes to hold the push rod in place.

    8

    Replace the dust cover for the tensioner, and install the tensioner. Tighten the mounting bolts for the tensioner to 20 ft- lbs. with a torque wrench. Remove the Allen wrench from the hole in the push rod housing to apply the correct tension to the timing belt.

    9

    Turn the crankshaft clockwise two full turns and align the timing marks once again. Replace the upper timing belt cover with a socket wrench. Install any components removed in step one to access the timing belt.

How to Check the Hub Assembly on a 2002 Venture

2002 Chevrolet Venture minivans use a sealed hub design for both front wheels. In this design, the wheel hub and bearing are pressed together in a non-serviceable unit. As the vehicle ages, the bearing portion of the hub unit can fail, causing an excessive grinding or humming noise when the vehicle is driven, especially at highway speeds. In addition to bearing failure, the hub flange can become warped causing similar symptoms. A dial indicator must be used to accurately measure the looseness and runout of the wheel hub unit in order to accurately diagnose a faulty assembly.

Instructions

    1

    Lift the front of the vehicle and support it with jack stands under each control arm in order to load the ball joint. Check to make sure that the vehicle is securely supported. Loosen the hub cap nuts, if equipped, with a 19 mm metric socket and ratchet. Remove the hub cap.

    2

    Secure a dial indicator to base stand in front of the wheel. Adjust the dial indicator so its plunger is at a 90-degree angle to flat, inside face of the wheel, adjacent to the lug nuts.

    3

    Zero the dial indicator, then grip the top of the tire with both hands. Push and pull on the top of the tire; towards the tire on the other side and then back towards your body.

    4

    Note the reading on the dial indicator while moving the tire back and forth. If the movement exceeds 0.005-inches, then the wheel bearing has excessive play and must be replaced.

    5

    Lift the vehicle off of the jack stands using the automotive jack and remove the stands. Set the vehicle back on the ground. Break the lug nuts loose using a 19 mm lug nut wrench. Raise the vehicle and support it once again with the jack stands. Remove the lug nuts and wheel.

    6

    Reinstall two lug nuts to hold the rotor in place. Install a C-clamp over of the brake caliper so the fixed end of the clamp is resting against the inside of the caliper and the movable end is resting against the outboard brake pad. Tighten the C-clamp to squeeze the brake caliper piston back into the caliper. This allows the brake caliper to slide off easily.

    7

    Remove the bolts holding the brake caliper bracket to the steering knuckle with a ratchet and a metric socket. Pry the brake caliper bracket and caliper away from the rotor as an assembly and tie it to the coil spring with a length of mechanics wire. Dont allow it to hang from the brake hose.

    Remove the lug nuts holding the rotor in place and remove the rotor from the steering knuckle. Clean the hub flange with a wire brush to remove any corrosion. Shift the transmission into neutral.

    9

    Set the dial indicator against the hub flange at a 90-degree angle, and then zero the dial indicator. Rotate the flange clockwise and note the reading on the dial indicator. If the needle movement exceeds .005-inches, then the hub flange has excessive run out and the hub and bearing assembly must be replaced.

You can remove the SRS airbags from your 2002 Dodge without taking the car to a mechanic. Airbags are considered to be an essential safety element, but there are some people who are worried about rare injuries that can occur from the airbag deploying. Removing the airbags is a fairly easy procedure and only requires a couple of simple tools. Just make sure to always keep your face and body away from the front of the airbag as you remove it to prevent injury to yourself.

    Raise the front hood of your Dodge and loosen the retaining nuts on the battery cable clamps. Slide the clamps off of the battery terminals one at a time. Wait 30 minutes for the battery charge to drain out.

    Consult your owners manual to find the location of the airbag fuses. Then open the fuse panel cover that can be found on the drivers-side dashboard. Remove the fuse puller and use it to remove the airbag fuses.

    Remove the screws on the back of the steering column with a screwdriver and caully remove the airbag from the middle of the steering wheel. Cut the wires attached to it using wire cutters. Set the airbag in a safe location away from people and pets.

    Open up the glove box and unhook the straps that hold it open. Unscrew the screws holding the glove box in place and pull the entire glove box out of the dashboard. Unbolt the airbag very caully using the socket wrench. Unhook the power cable at the rear of the airbag. Remember to keep your body and face away from the airbag. Slide the airbag out of the compartment.

    Put the glove box back in the compartment, screw in the screws and reattach the straps. Close the glove box cover.

    Put the airbag fuses back into their proper places within the fuse panel and close up the fuse panel cover. Reconnect the battery cables and tighten the retaining nuts.

How to Locate Thermostat for a 2002 Mitsubishi Galant

Locating the thermostat on the engine in your 2002 Mitsubishi Galant is the first step in replacing it or removing it for testing. The thermostat is located inside the thermostat housing, so you will not be able to see the actual thermostat unless you remove the housing. Replacement thermostats are available at most auto-parts stores, but be sure to check the heat range required for your engine. Not all thermostats are the same and one with the wrong heat range will allow the engine to overheat, damaging it.

    Open the hood of your Galant and locate the radiator at the front of the car. You will see two hoses, upper and lower, coming out of the radiator.

    Follow the upper radiator hose, starting at the end that connects to the radiator, down its length. The hose runs to the top of the engine but may run under or over other components along the way.

    Locate the end of the hose, where it attaches to the engine. The housing it attaches to is the thermostat housing. The thermostat is located under this housing. To gain access to it, you have to remove the housing after first draining the cooling system. You will recognize the thermostat--it is metal and looks like a disk with a spring in the center. It is also the only thing under the housing.

A 2002 Ford pickup is equipped with an On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD II) computer. This computer reads trouble codes sent from sensors positioned throughout the vehicle, and it keeps track of when the pickup needs to be serviced. When you see the Service Engine Soon light illuminate on your instrument panel, this is information being sent to you from the vehicles computer. Make sure you service the engine first before you attempt to reset and turn off the light. Otherwise the light will just keep turning back on and it wont accurately keep track of when your vehicle needs servicing.

Instructions

    Lift up the hood of the pickup and prop it open. Remove the battery cable from the negative side of the battery using a 1/2-inch end wrench. Let the truck sit for about five minutes. Put the cable back in place and close the hood.

    Put the key into the ignition and start the engine. Look at your instrument panel to see if the Service Engine Soon light turned off. If it didnt turn off, go to an auto parts store and buy an OBD-II code scanner to reset the light.

    3

    Plug the connector on the OBD-II code scanner into the port to the left under the steering column. Put the key into the ignition and turn the car on but dont start the engine. Key into your scanner your pickups make, model and engine size.

    4

    Wait for the trouble code for Service Engine Soon to appear on the scanner. When it does, press "delete." Remove the scanner from the port and start the engine. The light should now turn off.

    Visually inspect the fill hole at the top of the radiator. If you can see the metal fins inside the radiator, and you dont see any coolant, then you need to add some.

The 2002 BMW X5 battery is located in the trunk, beneath the spare tire. When you need to replace the battery in your X5, you need to remove the spare tire from the trunk to access it. Buy a replacement battery from an auto parts retailer or BMW dealer. Change the battery yourself at home for a fraction of what it would cost to have a mechanic do the job.

Instructions

    Remove the key from the ignition. Open the trunk of the X5.

    Lift up the carpet lining above the spare tire. Remove the four retaining nuts around the center of the spare tire with a 10-mm socket attached to a ratchet.

    Lift the spare tire out of the trunk. Remove the bolts on each end of the crossbar over the battery with a 13-mm socket and ratchet. Lift the crossbar out of the trunk. Loosen the negative battery cable with a 10-mm socket and ratchet. Remove the cable from the battery. Repeat the process on the positive cable.

    Lift the battery out of the trunk. Insert the new battery in the same alignment as the old one. Attach the positive battery cable and tighten it with the 10-mm socket and ratchet. Repeat the process with the negative cable. Replace the crossbar and secure the bolts with a 13-mm socket and ratchet.

    Replace the spare tire. Secure the retaining nuts with a 10-mm socket and ratchet set. Replace the carpet over the spare tire area and close the trunk.

How to Replace a Timing Belt on a 2002 Kia Spectra

Replacing the timing belt on your 2002 Kia Spectra is a task that you must schedule as part of routine maintenance when the car reaches approximately 60,000 miles. It is generally agreed in the auto world that you need a new one about every 60,000 miles since the belt like other moving parts will wear. While it is certainly more complicated than simply replacing a fan belt, its still something that you can do in your driveway and youre much better off to do it as part of your maintenance schedule than it is to have the belt break and leave you stranded on the highway.

Instructions

    Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

    2

    Remove the accessory drive belts using the proper size socket to loosen the alternator and push it toward the engine.

    3

    Remove the alternator using the proper size socket and ratchet.

    4

    Remove the water pump and crankshaft pulleys using the proper size socket and ratchet.

    5

    Remove the timing belt guide plate with a wrench.

    6

    Remove the upper and lower timing belt covers with a socket and ratchet.

    7

    Position the crankshaft so that the notch on it lines up with the timing mark on the engine. If your motor is dirty and grimy, use a grease rag to clean the area so the marks will be visible.

    8

    Remove the timing belt tensioner using a wrench and then take off the timing belt.

    9

    Reinstall the timing belt tensioner using the proper size wrench and then move it to its furthest point and tighten the lock bolt.

    10

    Install the timing belt on the pulleys: crankshaft pulley first, then the idler pulley, exhaust camshaft pulley, intake camshaft pulley, and finally, on the tensioner pulley.

    11

    Loosen the tensioner pulley using a wrench and allow the spring to place the proper tension on the timing belt. Now tighten the tensioner pulley and torque the bolts to 28 to 38 foot-pounds.

    12

    Rotate the crankshaft two turns clockwise using the proper size wrench and make sure that the timing marks still line up properly.

    13

    Reinstall the upper and lower timing belt covers and tighten them using the appropriately sized socket.

    14

    Re-attach the timing belt guide plate using a socket.

    15

    Reinstall the water pump and crankshaft pulleys using the proper size socket and ratchet and make sure they are tight.

    16

    Put the alternator in place and secure it with its bolt loosely.

    17

    Reinstall the accessory belt over all the accessory pulleys.

    18

    Pull the alternator toward the front of the car and tighten it when the accessory belt is drawn tight. Be caul not to make the accessory belt too tight. You should be able to push the belt about a half inch.

    19

    Reconnect the battery cable and start the car to test the installation.

The 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse has an On-Board Diagnostics system that monitors the vehicles emissions components and many of the vehicles mechanical aspects. When the "Service Engine" light illuminates on the instrument panel, you need to take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic for service before resetting the light. Otherwise, the computer wont be able to determine the next service date. Also, you will be erasing the trouble codes your mechanic needs to diagnose the problem.

Instructions

    Find the diagnostic port on the Eclipse on the underside of the dashboard, near the drivers side. Plug the OBD code scanner into the port.

    2

    Put the key in the ignition and turn the engine to the "On" position. Make sure you dont start the engine. This will power on the code scanner automatically.

    3

    Wait for the OBD code scanner to run through its test. When it displays the trouble codes, write them on a piece of paper. Take the codes to your mechanic or look them up yourself in a repair manual. Unplug the code scanner and have the vehicle serviced.

    4

    Repeat Steps 1 and 2. Wait for the trouble codes to appear. Press "Delete" or another similar button on your scanner. This will erase the codes and reset the light. Unplug the scanner from the port and turn off the vehicle.

    5

    Turn on the engine and verify that the service engine light has turned off.

The clockspring provides constant electrical contact to the steering wheel-mounted module and related components. Its primary responsibility is feeding power from the battery to the air bag for emergency deployment. If the clockspring fails, it affects the air bag, horn, and cruise control, if equipped. As with any part, the clockspring may fail due to age. It is especially susceptible due to the constant rotation of the steering wheel. There are two versions of clocksprings. If you have cruise control, you need the three-wire version. Otherwise, buy the two-wire model.

Instructions

    1

    Position the front wheels straight-ahead. Remove the key from the ignition.

    2

    Remove the negative battery cable wrap the terminal with high-quality electrical tape. Wait a minimum of two minutes before proceeding with repairs on the vehicle. The reserve capacitor holds a charge to deploy the air bag even after disconnection of the cable.

    3

    Remove the two Phillips screws just below the steering wheel on the dashboard. Remove the panels located behind the knee panel. Youll encounter two Phillips screws and two clips.

    4

    Using your Phillips screwdriver, remove the two steering wheel shroud cover screws.

    5

    Use a hex driver to remove the air bag module mounting bolts at "10" and "2" on the rear of the steering wheel. Gently tilt the module forward.

    6

    Press the connector for the yellow air bag wire toward the module until the lock spreads open. Use a small tipped prying tool to gently pry the connector from the module while holding the lock open. Unplug the black and white horn wire and slide off its rubber sleeve.

    7

    Unplug the green wire located near the steering wheel retaining bolt if your vehicle has cruise control.

    8

    Carry the air bag module with the bag and trim cover pointed away from the body in case of accidental deployment. Place it in a clean and dry area with the cover side up.

    9

    Prevent the steering wheel from turning while using a 21 or 22 mm socket to remove the retaining bolt.

    10

    Mark the steering wheel and shaft for re-alignment. Extract the steering wheel from the shaft by using a steering wheel puller.

    11

    Disconnect the remote switch harness connectors. If you are unable to start or unlock your vehicle remotely, you can ignore this step.

    12

    Look up at the steering column from the floorboard. Disconnect the clocksprings two lower electrical connectors.

    13

    Remove the clocksprings retaining screws and slide it up and off the upper steering column shaft.

Installation

    14

    Slide the new clockspring on the steering column with the locking pin in place. If you remove the locking pin before installation, youll have to perform other centering measures before you can install the part.

    15

    Align the clockspring and seat its three pins on the rotor hub with the three holes in the turn signal cancel cam. The oblong pin belongs at the top of the clockspring rotor. Align and seat one pin and two mounting holes with corresponding holes in combination switch.

    16

    Install the two clockspring retaining screws.

    17

    Reinstall the steering wheel, including tightening the retaining bolt.

    18

    Tilt the air bag module into place and re-attach the horn, air bag and, if applicable, the cruise control connectors. Place the module into position and tighten its bolts.

    Reinstall all the panels and re-attach the battery cable.

    Park the vehicle and turn off the ignition. Pop up and secure the vehicles hood and find the battery.

    Loosen the nut on the negative battery cable with the adjustable wrench. The negative cable is black and marked with a "-" sign. Slip the clamp off of the negative battery terminal and do not to let it touch anything metal, especially the positive battery terminal.

    Wait 30 minutes while the Tahoes computer resets.

    Put the negative battery cable back in place and tighten the nut with the adjustable wrench.

    Put the key into the ignition and start the vehicles engine. Verify all warning and service lights have shut off. Drive the vehicle. It will take a few trips for the computer to reset and get in sync with all of the vehicles functions.

You can reset the dashboard lights on your 02 BMW 325 right from your home garage, saving yourself both money and time. There are various warning lights that can illuminate on the BWMs dashboard such as "Check Engine," "Service Engine," or "SRS" (Supplemental Restraint System for airbag malfunctions.) Once you have your vehicle looked at and repaired by a qualified mechanic, you can reset the lights yourself using an OBD scan tool. This tool can be purchased from your local auto parts retailer.

    Find the fuse panel cover on the lower part of the drivers side dashboard. Pull down on it from the top using your fingers to remove it.

    Find a port that is the same size and shape as the OBD scan tools connector end. Plug the scan tool into this port.

    Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "II" position, taking care not to start the engine. Observe the OBD scan tool and wait for the light on the face plate to stop flashing. Notice the instrument panel of your BMW to make sure the warning lights have shut off.

    Remove the OBD scan tool and put the fuse panel cover back in place.

How to Remove Belts on a 2002 Maxima

The Nissan Maxima is a full-size car marketed as a "four-door sports car." The 2002 Maxima has two main drive belts. One belt controls the alternator and the power steering pump. The other belt controls the air conditioner compressor. When the engine is running, the crankshaft pulley drives the belts around various pulleys. Replacing the belts is relatively easy if you pay attention to how the belts are routed around the pulleys. Belts should be replaced if they show any signs of wear or damage.

Instructions

Removal

    1

    Open the hood and locate the belt routing diagram on the top of the plastic fan shroud. This diagram outlines the exact routing of each belt around each pulley it is associated with. If the belt routing diagram is faded or missing, make a drawing of the exact routing of the belts.

    2

    Remove the plastic cover from under the front of the car. You will need a ratchet and a socket to remove the screws. You may also need a flathead screwdriver to pry down on the corners of the cover.

    3

    Stand in front of the engine and locate the alternator. It is on the left side of the engine. Between the alternator and crankshaft pulley is a belt tension adjustment idler pulley. With a ratchet and socket, loosen the bolt to the bracket located in the middle of this pulley. Do not remove the bolt.

    4

    Use a ratchet and socket to turn the pulley adjustment bolt at the end of the idler pulley counter-clockwise and loosen the idler pulley until the v-belt is loose enough to slide off the alternator pulley and power steering pump pulley. Remove the belt.

    5

    Locate the air conditioner pump. Between the air conditioner pump and crankshaft pulley is a second belt tension adjustment idler pulley. Loosen this idler pulley the same way by loosening the center bracket bolt and then turning the adjustment bolt until the belt is loose enough to slide off the crankshaft and air conditioner pump pulleys. Remove the belt.

Installation

    Compare the old belt to the new belt to make sure the new belt is the proper size. Put the air conditioner belt on the air conditioner pump pulley as shown on the belt routing diagram. You must install this belt first. Route the belt around the air conditioner pump pulley, idler pulley and crank shaft pulley. You may have to crawl under the car to slide the belt on the bottom of the crankshaft pulley. Use a ratchet and socket to turn the bracket adjustment bolt in the center of the idler pulley to tighten the belt.

    Use a torque wrench to tighten the bolt in the middle of the idler pulley. The recommended torque is 24 to 28 ft.-lbs.

    Route the alternator/power steering belt around the alternator pulley, power steering pulley, crankshaft pulley and idler pulley as shown in the routing diagram. You may have to crawl under the car to slide the belt on the bottom of the crankshaft pulley. Use a ratchet and socket to turn the bracket adjustment bolt in the center of the idler pulley to tighten the belt.

    Use a torque wrench to tighten the bolt in the middle of the idler pulley. The recommended torque is 24 to 28 ft.-lbs.

    Inspect both belts to make sure they are seated in the pulleys and at the proper tension. You should be able to push down on the belt with your finger 1/8- to 1/4-inch if the distance between two pulleys is less than 12 inches. If the distance is more than 12 inches, the belt should deflect 1/8- to 3/9-inch.

    Crank the engine to turn the crankshaft pulley and make sure the belts are fully seated in the pulleys.

    Reinstall the bottom plastic cover under the engine and close the hood.

How to Replace the Timing Belt on a 2002 Hyundai Accent 1 6L DOHC

The Accent is a subcompact car that Hyundai began manufacturing in 1994. The 2002 model is a second generation Accent, which includes the 1999 through 2004 models. Hyundai introduced a 4-cylinder, 1.6-liter engine with a double overhead camshaft in 2002. This engine uses a timing belt to drive the camshafts with the crankshaft, allowing the cylinder valves to open and close in the correct sequence. The timing belt in a 2002 Hyundai Accent lasts about 60,000 miles.

Instructions

    Remove any components needed to access the cover for the timing belt. Disconnect the timing belt cover with a socket wrench.

    Rotate the crankshaft clockwise to align the timing marks. The timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket must align with the timing mark on the front of the crankcase. The timing mark on the camshaft sprocket must align with the timing marks on the cap of the camshaft.

    Loosen the tensioning bolt and pivot bolt on the timing belt tensioner with a socket wrench. Pull the tensioner towards the water pump as far as possible and tighten the adjusting bolt to hold the tensioner in place.

    Align the timing marks for the crank shaft sprocket and camshaft sprockets, if necessary. Place the timing belt onto the crankshaft sprocket, camshaft sprocket, and belt tensioner wheel, in that order. Turn the camshaft sprocket counterclockwise to take up the slack in the timing belt. Turn the crankshaft clockwise to align the timing marks once again.

    Loosen the mounting bolts for the timing belt tensioner with a socket wrench to place tension on on the timing belt. Ensure that all of the teeth on the camshaft sprocket engage the timing belt.

    Tighten the adjusting bolt on the timing belt tensioner with a socket wrench. Torque the pivot bolt to between 15 and 18 foot-pounds with a torque wrench. Turn the crankshaft one full turn clockwise to seat the timing belt. Ensure that the timing marks on the crankshaft align once again.

    Loosen the attaching bolts on the timing belt tensioner with a socket wrench to allow the tensioner to position itself. Adjust the tension on the timing belt by turning the tensioner wheel. The timing belt is at the correct tension when you pull the timing belt toward the water pump and the teeth of the timing belt come halfway across the tensioner adjusting bolt.,

    Replace the covers for the timing belt. Install any components you removed in step one to access the timing belt.

How to Change an Oxygen Sensor in a 2002 Hyundai Sonata

The 2002 Hyundai Sonata has two oxygen sensors along the exhaust. There is one sensor beside the manifold and one sensor near the catalytic converter. These sensors regulate the cars fuel consumption based on the amount of oxygen in the exhaust. If the car is inexplicably burning more fuel than usual or the "Check Engine" light is on, it may have a bad oxygen sensor. You can access and change the sensors easily at home. Buy replacement oxygen sensors from an auto parts store.

Instructions

    Raise the car with a jack and rest it on a stable set of jack stands. Remove the jack once the jack stands are secure.

    Locate the oxygen sensor protruding from the manifold or exhaust pipe. Pull the electrical connection free by pressing down on the retaining clip and pulling the connector straight out.

    Remove the oxygen sensor with an oxygen sensor socket and ratchet. Discard the old sensor.

    Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor. Do not get any anti-seize compound on the tip of the sensor. Thread the new sensor in carefully by hand. Tighten it with an oxygen sensor socket and ratchet. Torque the sensor to 40 pound-feet with a torque wrench.

    Plug the electrical connection into the connector on the oxygen sensor. Repeat the process on the second sensor if necessary.

    Raise the car slightly with the jack and remove the jack stands. Lower the car to the ground.

How to Reset an Oil Change Light on a 2002 Impala

The General Motors Oil Life Monitoring System measures the amount of usable life that is left in the motor oil since the last oil change as a percentage. The system calculates the oil life usage based on engine starts and the length of drive time, among other variables. This allows the owner to change the engine oil at just the right interval. The system either displays a percentage of remaining oil life, or will turn on a warning light when it is time for an oil change. The light must be reset manually when the oil is changed.

Instructions

    Turn the ignition key to the "On" or "Acc" position. Turn off the radio before you attempt to perform the reset.

    Press the "Tune Disp" button on the radio. Hold the button in for at least five seconds. You should see the word "Settings" displayed. Press the "Seek Ptype" or "Seek Pscan" up or down arrow. This will let you scroll through the main menu.

    Scroll through the menu until "Oil Life" appears in the radio display. Push the "1 Prev" or "2 Next" button on the radio to enter the sub-menu. Press the "Seek Ptype" or the "Seek Pscan" up or down arrow to navigate through the menu. Scroll with these buttons until "Reset" appears on the display.

    Press the "Tune Disp" button to reset the oil life monitor. You will hear a chime that verifies that the reset is completed. "Done" will also show on the radio display for one second.

    Scroll using the radio buttons until you see "Exit" on the radio display. Press the "Tune Disp" button on the radio to end the programming. A chime will sound to let you know that you have exited.
