How to Troubleshoot Problems With No Fire to the Points on a Massey Ferguson 175
There were only two engines available for the Massey Ferguson 175 over the span of the 11-year production run of this model. Both engines are 4-cylinder motors, one a diesel and the other gasoline powered. Only the latter has an ignition system, naturally. Troubleshooting a breaker point ignition system is a straightforward task, but all components involved must function correctly to deliver voltage where and when its needed.

Set the multi-meter to the voltage scale that registers 0 to 20 volts. Check the voltage at the battery terminals. Charge the battery if the voltage is less than 12.5 volts. Clean the battery cable connections if any corrosion is present.
2Turn the ignition switch to the run position. Measure the voltage at the primary side of the ignition coil. Replace the ignition switch or connecting wires if no voltage is present at the primary terminal of the ignition coil.
3Measure the resistance of the primary ignition coil windings. Turn the ignition switch off and set the multi-meter to the lowest ohm scale. Place the tester leads on both ignition coil terminals. Replace the coil if resistance exceeds 5 ohms.
4Replace the breaker points if they appear corroded or pitted. Replace the condenser, if no faults are found elsewhere. You can test the condenser with the proper equipment, but the cost of a new one is minimal.

How do I Troubleshoot a 1990 GM Truck That Wont Start
General Motors makes a wide variety of trucks for the consumer, but all of them rely on gas and a battery to start. If you are having problems starting your GM truck, you can troubleshoot the problem by taking a look at these two components. When your battery has a low charge or is dead, the trucks motor will not be able to fire up. GM trucks require gasoline to run, so a low fuel tank could be the culprit to your truck not starting.

Turn the key in your GM truck to get the gauge readings. Check the fuel level and make sure you have enough fuel to start the truck. Add fuel if needed.
2Pop the hood on the GM truck and locate the battery. Use a socket wrench to disconnect the battery terminals from the battery. Clean the battery terminals with a wire brush and a can of soda if corrosion has set in.
3Reattach the battery terminals to the battery and start the truck.
4Jump start the truck with jumper wires and another vehicle. Allow the truck to run for about five minutes and then turn it off.
5Try to restart the truck. If the truck doesnt restart, you will need to replace your battery.

How to Troubleshoot a 1995 Audi A6 Quattro
The Audi A6 Quattro is a sporty, four-door sedan known for its fuel economy. If you are having problems with your A6, there are several things that you can do before you take it to an import shop. Many quick fixes can be employed to get your A6 back on the road. Common issues affect the battery, fuel and cooling system. You dont have to be an Audi mechanic to get your A6 back up and running. You can do it yourself.

Turn the key in the ignition to get your A6s instrument panel to engage. Look over the dials on the gauges and make sure that you have enough fuel to start the vehicle. If you dont have enough gas, fill the tank up and try to start the car again. If the instrument panel does not light up, you have a problem with your battery.
2Open the hood with the hood release latch on the driver side under the steering wheel. Raise the hood and lock it in place with the hood rod. Check over the connections to the battery on the left side of the car.
3Tighten the connections with a pair of pliers. Make sure that you dont have any corrosion on the battery cables. Clean the cables with soda and a wire brush to remove any corrosion.
4Test the battery with a voltmeter to check its charge. If you have less than 11 volts running on your 12-volt battery, attach a battery charger to the battery terminals.
5Leave the battery charger on the battery for at least 12 hours to charge the unit. Try to restart your car. If the car does not restart, replace the battery with a new one.
6Locate the cooling system on the left side of the car if your A6 is overheating. This is labeled as "Coolant." Make sure that you have enough coolant in the system. Fill the coolant tank with 50/50 mix of coolant and water until it reaches the fill line on the side of the tank.

How to Troubleshoot a 95 Buick Century
The 1995 Buick Century was available in Special, Custom and Limited editions, each equipped with front-wheel drive and an automatic transmission. Regardless of the type of Century you own, problems can occur during ownership such as overheating, power steering going out and issues with tires and brakes. You can troubleshoot your vehicle to find the problem and save you a lot of money.

Open the hood of the car while the engine is running and listen for the sound of the fan(s) running. This is an indication of the engine overheating.
2Turn the engine off and check the fluid level in your coolant. Wait until the car cools down as it is easy to burn yourself when checking fluid levels of a hot engine. If the coolant is low, refill to the "Full Hot" coolant line. If you notice the fluid leaking, this can indicate a possible leak in your radiator hoses, heater hoses, water pump or another part of the cooling system.
3Remove the dipstick from the power steering compartment while the engine is off. The power steering compartment is located on the passenger side of the engine. Wipe the dipstick with a clean rag and reinsert. If the fluid level is below the "C" mark you may experience difficulty with the power steering. Add fluid and recheck to verify you have added the right amount.
4Inspect your tires to see if there are any bulges, cracks or splits in the tire. Check the treadwear of your tires to determine if you need to replace them. Poor tire conditions can lead to flat tires. Also, the cord or fabric inside the tire should not be showing through the rubber.
5Listen for a high-pitched sound while driving and whether it stops when you press on the brakes. This may be an indication that your brake pads are worn. Unless you are skilled in brake repair, take your car to a repair shop for inspection and possible brake replacement. It is a good idea to have your front and rear brakes checked at the same time.

Check both the air filter and fuel filter if your Lexus GS300 engine has difficulty starting. A dirty or clogged air filter or fuel filter can easily be replaced and may not only correct an engine start problem but will also increase fuel efficiency.
2Inspect the power steering belt in your 2001 Lexus GS300 if you experience difficulty when turning the steering wheel. Power steering belts wear down over time and eventually must be replaced.
3Inspect the heating core of your Lexus GS300 if a rank odor can be smelled while sitting in your vehicle. Mold and mildew can form from an antifreeze or coolant leak that deposits into the floorboard of your 2001 Lexus GS300.
4Inspect the distributor cap of your Lexus vehicle if you experience a loss of power while driving. The distributor cap is a device in the engine that manages the wires from the ignition to spark plugs. The distributor cap may be loose, worn out or otherwise damaged, which leads to the spark plugs misfiring, firing out of sequence or not firing at all.
5Inspect your Lexus GS300s carburetor if the engine undergoes stalling problems while driving. The carburetor may be improperly positioned, dirty, faulty or simply worn out. If the carburetor is dirty, it does not necessarily have to be replaced but can be cleaned instead.

How to Troubleshoot a Schumacher Battery Charger
Schumacher has been producing automotive electrical products since 1946. Its an official supplier for the NASCAR auto racing brand and produces chargers, jump starters and inverters for NASCAR. Schumacher battery chargers are designed to work automatically, however issues can include the meter not working, noises and the charger not turning on. These kinds of problems can be rectified.

Jiggle the clips and rock the clips backwards and forwards if theres no meter reading. The clips arent making proper contact.
2Try a different AC power outlet if the charger wont turn on when its connected. You can try another appliance -- a worklight, for example -- and see if that works. If the worklight wont come on, the problem is with the wall outlet, not the Schumacher charger. If the lamp comes on, try the charger again and wiggle the connections.
3Allow the charging to continue for up to 20 minutes if the charger makes clicking noises. The clicking can be the circuit breaker cycling and can indicate a defective battery, or a very discharged battery that isnt defective. If the clicking doesnt stops after about 20 minutes, the battery may well be bad and you should replace it.
4Shut off the charger and reverse the battery connections if the battery has been replaced and the clicking continues. The leads are on the wrong poles.

Insert your key into the SR5 and turn it so the electrical instrument panel lights up. Check over the fuel level in your trucks gas tank. If the fuel level is low enough for the truck not to start, fill the gas tank with fuel. If the instrument panel doesnt light up, you need to check your battery.
2Pop the hood to the SR5 with the hood latch under the steering wheel. Open the hood and engage the hood rod to keep the hood up. Check over the battery connections. The battery is the black box with a black and red terminal coming off of it. Use a pair of insulated pliers to tighten the connection.
3Clean the battery terminals if you find any corrosion on them. You can clean the terminals with a wire brush a little bit of soda. The carbonation from the soda will eat away the corrosion. Put the terminals back onto the battery and then try to restart the truck.
4Check over the cooling system if you are having problems with your SR5 overheating. The coolant tank is on the left side of the engine block. Make sure that you have enough coolant so its up to the fill line on the side of the tank. Fill the coolant tank with enough coolant so it reaches the fill line.
5Climb under the truck and locate the starter on the right side of the engine. This is a small black box. Have a friend turn the ignition. If you hear a buzzing noise from the starter, you need to have a professional replace it.
How to Troubleshoot Mazda Rotary Engines
First released in 1978 and spanning three generations, Mazdas rotary-powered RX-7 grew to become one of the most easily recognizable and sought-after sports cars to come from Japan. Now out of production, the RX-7 is not only enjoyed by enthusiasts, but is also competitive in several classes of racing. With its single-minded philosophy and emphasis on performance, the 13B-REW (the motor designation of the last production model) is able to crank out 255 horsepower, all from a minuscule 1.3-liter twin-rotor Wankel engine bolstered by sequential twin-turbos. The drawback of this design -- and power output -- is the extreme heat and stress to which engine components are subjected, in some cases requiring expensive rebuilds after just 60,000 miles. The engine can be quite finicky to troubleshoot.

Attach an engine code reader to the Mazdas diagnostic port to quickly identify any faulty components.
2Tune up the vehicle by installing new filters (oil, air, fuel) and replacing vital engine fluids. Pay special attention to the engine coolant -- which should have no traces of dirt or oil. If you are experiencing any sort of hesitation, rough idle, or inconsistent power delivery, thoroughly inspect and replace any worn ignition components such as the ignition coil, igniter module and spark plugs/wires. This can cure a myriad of symptoms and prevent new ones from developing.
3Install a new set of silicone vacuum lines (silicone withstands heat better and stays more flexible). The stock lines will often become cracked or brittle due to prolonged exposure to heat, causing erratic boost levels and idle surge.
4Connect a data-logger unit to your vehicle in order to further investigate engine conditions. The data-logger is able to read values directly from the engine control unit, and displays a list of vital parameters in real time. This will help identify pre-ignition (knock) events, as well as display the various timing and fuel maps under varying engine loads.
5Attach a multimeter to your battery and alternator to test for correct voltages. Low readings (under 12 volts) indicate a weak system, potentially making the vehicle difficult to start, or even causing a backfire through the exhaust.

How do I Troubleshoot a Nissan Altima Engine That Wont Start
If youre having trouble getting your Nissan Altima to start, there are a few quick and relatively simple things that you can check yourself before an expensive mechanic has to be called. In many cases when a car will not start, there is an issue with the electrical system that must be diagnosed. You can save time and money by diagnosing the issue yourself with simple tools, and you may even be able to make the repairs yourself.

Put your car in park and apply the emergency brake for safety. Try to start the car. If the car tries to turn over but will not crank to life, your problem very well could be a dead battery. Turn on the headlights; if the lights are dim or not on at all, your battery needs a post. Use a set of jumper cables to try to start the car; replace the battery if even a jump fails to start the car.
2Test the battery cables of the car by wiggling them if the car will start on occasion but not every time. You could have an electrical short. Tighten the cables to the battery posts if they are loose at all. If you notice that corrosion is forming on the battery terminals, connectors or cable ends, pour a carbonated beverage over them to remove corrosion. Clean the battery terminals with a battery terminal cleaner to get the most direct connection possible.
3Try to start your Nissan Altima while listening very closely to the sounds that it makes. If you hear a whirling noise followed by a clicking noise, there is a solid chance that you may have a starter problem. Remove the air cleaner with a screwdriver to gain access to the starter, and tap on it. This may engage the flywheel and start the car. Contact a mechanic about replacing the starter if this also fails. This is a fix that you may be able to make but can be challenging.
4Place the key into the ignition and try to turn it. If the key will not turn or gets jammed, you may have a broken ignition switch. Do not try to force the key. This could break the key off in the switch. Contact a mechanic about having the switch replaced.

How to Troubleshoot High PSI in the Oil Tank on a Harley
There are four likely causes that an oil gauge on a Harley might indicate high oil pressure. Two of the causes are literally connected to the oil tank. In order of probability from most to least, your oil pressure gauge is faulty or the electrical connection is loose; your crankcase vent line is clogged; either your oil return or your oil feeder line is kinked or blocked; or finally, your oil tank is overfilled. Work the problem in a few steps.

Drain the oil from your oil tank into a drain pan by loosening the hose clamp on you drain line with a screwdriver and removing the oil drain plug with a pair of pliers. Replace the plug and drain line after the oil drains from the oil tank.
2Remove the oil filter from the front of your bike with an oil filter wrench. Drain the oil from the filter into the drain pan.
3Discard the old oil filter and install a new filter hand tight onto the oil filter stud.
4Follow the wires from your oil pressure gauge top the crankcase and check for loose connections or an obviously defective wire.
5Inspect the oil feeder and oil return line from the crankcase to the oil tank. Physically remove the lines by unfastening any hose clamps with a screwdriver and any permanent fittings with an open end wrench.
6Stick a wire through the length of the hoses to ensure the hoses are not clogged. Replace the two oil lines.
7Follow the oil vent line from the top of the oil tank next to the return line to the crankcase. Remove the line from the crankcase with an open end wrench. Pull the line out of the oil tank with your hands.
8Sick a wire through the vent line to ensure it is not clogged. Replace the vent line with an open end wrench.
9Add the appropriate amount of oil, either 3 or 4 quarts, to the oil tank as specified in the owners manual for your Harley. Turn over the motorcycle for about 15 seconds.
10Remove the fill plug and read the dipstick to ensure the oil level reads full. Start the motorcycle and check the oil gauge. If the gauge still indicates that your oil pressure is too high the gauge is probably defective.

How to Troubleshoot a Razor Go Kart
The Razor brand is generally known for its scooters, but the company also manufactures small electric go karts. If you are having problems with your Razor go kart, there are several things you can do that should help it work properly again. Troubleshooting the battery, the charging connector and the weight capacity should remedy most of the problems. You dont have to be a Razor technician to ensure your go kart stay in good working condition; its possible to check out any potential issues with little hassle and minimal knowledge of the go kart itself.

Charge the battery on the go kart for a total of 12 hours. If you do not charge the battery for 12 hours, the battery will die prematurely. If you are charging the battery for the first time, charge it for 18 hours. Recharge the battery if you are not getting power to your go kart.
2Check the connection on the charger. Run your hands up and down the charging cable. Make sure there are no frays or breaks in the wiring. If there are frays or breaks in the wiring, the battery will not be able to charge. This could also cause an electrical fire. Replace the charger if problems are discovered.
3Follow the battery terminal cables going to the motor. If the battery terminal cables are not tight on the battery, the motor will not be able to get power. Use a pair of channel locks to tighten the connection.
4Drive the go kart on flat surfaces. The go kart is not built for driving off-road and you will not achieve maximum speed if you do take it off-road. The go kart has the ability to reach 12 miles per hour but only if its driven on flat surfaces.
5Check the total weight you are loading into the go kart. Razor go karts can only support 140 pounds so if you have more than 140 pounds in the go kart, you will not be able to reach maximum speed.
