How to Fix the Backup Lights on a Nissan Frontier

The reverse light in your Nissan Frontier is in the lower position inside the rear combination light assembly. When the reverse light burns out, you should replace the bulb quickly for your own safety on the road. Buy a 921 bulb from an auto parts retailer or Nissan dealership and change the bulb at home to be back on the road in minutes.

    Lower the tailgate of your Frontier. Locate the two mounting screws on the inside edge of the taillight assembly. Remove the screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

    Slide the taillight assembly out and away from the bed of the truck. Grasp the lower bulb and pull it straight out of the assembly.

    Push the new bulb into place. Align the taillight assembly in the mounting area. Insert the two mounting screws and tighten them with the screwdriver.

    Repeat the process to change the bulb on the other side. Close the tailgate.

How to Change a Nissan Frontier Timing Belt

Nissan markets its D22 and D40 pickup trucks in North America as the Frontier. A six-cylinder 3.3-liter engine with a double overhead camshaft is standard for the D22 models. The timing belt for this engine keeps the camshafts synchronized with the camshaft, enabling the engine to run smoothly. The timing belt has a limited lifetime, and typically requires replacement after 60,000 miles.

Instructions

    1

    Disconnect the undercover from the engine with a socket wrench. Remove the shroud, cooling fan and cooling fan pulleys from the radiator. Drain the coolant from the radiator, and disconnect the hose from the radiator. Remove the radiator from the vehicle.

    Remove the accessory drive belts for the power steering pump, air compressor and alternator. Disconnect the spark plugs and the distributor dust shield with a socket wrench. Remove the idler pulley and bracket from the air compressor.

    3

    Disconnect the air intake tube from the cylinder head cover with a socket wrench. Detach the radiator hose from the housing of the thermostat.

    4

    Remove the mounting bolt for the crankshaft pulley, and pull the pulley from its shaft with a gear puller. Remove the front timing belt covers.

    Turn the crankshaft clockwise to align the punch mark on the crankshaft sprocket with the notch on the housing for the oil pump. The punch mark on the left camshaft sprocket must also align with the punch mark on the rear timing belt cover.

    Fasten the bolt for the crankshaft pulley directly to the crankshaft with a socket wrench. Disconnect the timing belt tensioner with a hex wrench, and remove the tensioner spring. Remove the timing belt from its sprockets.

    Remove the cylinder head covers with a socket wrench, and loosen the rocker arm retaining bolts. Install the timing belt tensioner with a hex wrench, and connect the tensioner spring. Tighten the lock nut to hold the timing belt tensioner in place temporarily.

    Align the marks on the timing belt with the timing marks on the crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprockets. Install the new timing belt onto the sprockets with the arrow facing the front covers for the front timing belt.

    Hold the timing belt tensioner in place manually. Loosen its lock nut with a hex wrench until the tensioner turns 70 to 80 degrees clockwise. Tighten the lock nut to hold the tensioner in this position.

    Rotate the crankshaft clockwise with a socket wrench by several full turns, and align the timing marks again. Push the timing belt with 22 pounds of pressure between the right camshaft sprocket and tensioner pulley while you loosen the tensioner lock nut.

    Rotate the crankshaft clockwise by several full turns with a socket wrench, and align the timing marks once again. Attach the front timing belt covers, and tighten the mounting bolts to 24 foot pounds with a torque wrench. Remove the bolt for the crankshaft pulley, and install the pulley onto the shaft. Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to between 90 and 98 foot pounds.

    Install the remaining components by performing steps one through three in reverse order. Start the engine, and correct any coolant leaks.

How to Retrieve My 1994 Nissan Pickup Trouble Codes

You can retrieve the trouble codes from your 94 Nissan pickup right from your home garage, saving yourself both time and money. 1994 Nissan pickups come equipped with an on-board diagnostics I computer (OBD I) that retrieves and stores all trouble codes sent to it from various sensors within the pickup. When these sensors detect a problem in the Nissan, they send the code to the computer. The computer illuminates service and warning lights on the instrument cluster. You can retrieve these codes using a handheld device called an OBD I code reader. This can be purchased online or at any auto parts retailer.

Instructions

    Locate the diagnostic port near the steering column on the underside of the drivers side dashboard. It will be the same size and shape as the connector on the OBD I code reader.

    Plug the code reader into this diagnostic port.

    Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "II" position, taking care not to start the engine.

    Wait for the code reader to turn on. Select the "Read Codes" command (or a similar command) on the face of the reader. Wait for the code reader to display the codes. Write down the codes it displays.

    Look up the meaning of the alphanumeric codes in the manual. Unplug the reader and perform the servicing or repairs the vehicle needs based on the information obtained from the codes.

How to Fix the Clutch in a Nissan Frontier

The clutch is one of the most important parts of any vehicle, letting you shift gears and adjust your speed. When your Nissan Frontiers clutch is working properly, you get the most control out your truck especially while you are driving out in the open roads. All clutches, however, will need replacement at one point or the other. Once your Nissan starts to screech and grind each time you use the clutch, you need to either replace a defective part in your clutch system, or replace the entire clutch system with a clutch kit.

Instructions

    Lift the truck. Use a hydraulic jack to life the truck. If your truck has a front wheel drive system, lift the front wheels. If your truck has a rear wheel drive system, lift the rear wheels. Support the weight of the truck with a jack stand.

    Remove the axle. Unscrew the bolts that keep the driveshaft to the differential with a wrench. Once the bolts are removed, you can slip the driveshaft from the universal joint in the differential. Make sure that the wire caps on the universal joint and the driveshaft do not hit the ground, because impact can damage the sensitive pieces. Place a pan underneath the transmission tail housing to protect your floor from dripping transmission fluid.

    Unwire the harnesses. Unscrew the housing on the transmission and remove any wires that keep the transmission harnessed. Mark all of the wires so that you know where to connect them after you are done fixing the clutch. Also remove the starter which is connected by a wire to the transmission.

    Support the engine. Place a jack stand under the engine, so that you will be able to take the transmission mount out of the cross member. Once the cross member is free, you can remove the bolts around the transmission bell housing. This will allow you to pull the transmission from the rest of the engine. Do this until the pressure plate is revealed from under the input shifts.

    Remove the transmission. Unscrew the bolts that keep the flywheel attached to the pressure plate and then remove the transmission fully. Make sure that the flywheel is not damaged, otherwise it needs to be replaced. Also be sure to wipe the crankshaft flange clean.

    Replace the clutch. Attach the new pressure plate onto the flywheel. Once attached, you can insert the clutch disc and then tighten using the appropriate amount of torque indicated in the packaging of the clutch replacement kit that you bought. Add a bit of grease on the bearings so that you can add the release bearing to the clutch disc.

    Put parts back in place. Insert the transmission back into place, until the shaft from the transmission enters the hole in the clutch disc. Install the bell housing again using bolts, and then gently lower the truck back onto the ground.

How to Change Fuel Injectors on a 1994 Nissan Maxima

The Nissan Maxima is a mid-size car manufactured by Nissan since 1976. The third generation of this vehicle was in production from 1989 to 1994 and represented a major redesign. All versions of the 1994 Nissan Maxima have a 6-cylinder 3.0-liter engine with sequential fuel injection. The fuel injectors are on top of the engine and their replacement also requires you to remove the fuel rails.

Instructions

    1

    Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench to prevent the battery from producing sparks. Remove the collector for the intake manifold. Detach the hoses on the fuel pressure regulator and fuel rails.

    Detach the electrical connectors for the fuel injector and disconnect the mounting bolts for the fuel rail with a socket wrench. Lift the fuel rail assembly from the engine.

    3

    Remove the retainer screws for the fuel injector with a socket wrench and press the fuel injector from the fuel rail. Discard the O-rings for the fuel injector and apply a thin layer of engine oil to the new O-rings.

    4

    Install the O-rings to the new fuel injector and press the fuel injector into the fuel rail. Fasten the retainer screws for the fuel injector with a socket wrench.

    Place the fuel rail assembly onto the engine. Torque the fuel rail mounting bolts to between 6.9 and 8.0 ft. lbs. with a socket wrench, then torque them to between 15 and 20 ft.lbs.

    Attach the fuel lines to the fuel rail assembly and connect the hoses to the fuel pressure regulator. Connect the electrical connector for the fuel injectors and install the collector for the intake manifold with a socket wrench. Connect the cable to the negative battery terminal. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks.

Thrust Angle

    The preferred thrust angle is 37.5/34.0 degrees for the two-wheel-drive trims and 37.9/34.0 degrees for the four-wheel-drive trims, but it can vary by -1.5 degrees or +1.5 degrees on any trim.

    Pop up the hood of the car and locate the battery. The negative terminal has a black plastic covering. Find the negative battery clamp . Loosen the nut a bit using a 10 mm open-end wrench.

    Remove the clamp from the battery terminal. Take care not to let it touch the positive side of the battery or cable.

    Wait about 10 minutes, then reattach the negative battery cable to the negative side of the terminal and tighten the nut with the wrench.

How do I Troubleshoot a Nissan Altima Engine That Wont Start?

If youre having trouble getting your Nissan Altima to start, there are a few quick and relatively simple things that you can check yourself before an expensive mechanic has to be called. In many cases when a car will not start, there is an issue with the electrical system that must be diagnosed. You can save time and money by diagnosing the issue yourself with simple tools, and you may even be able to make the repairs yourself.

    Put your car in park and apply the emergency brake for safety. Try to start the car. If the car tries to turn over but will not crank to life, your problem very well could be a dead battery. Turn on the headlights; if the lights are dim or not on at all, your battery needs a post. Use a set of jumper cables to try to start the car; replace the battery if even a jump fails to start the car.

    Test the battery cables of the car by wiggling them if the car will start on occasion but not every time. You could have an electrical short. Tighten the cables to the battery posts if they are loose at all. If you notice that corrosion is forming on the battery terminals, connectors or cable ends, pour a carbonated beverage over them to remove corrosion. Clean the battery terminals with a battery terminal cleaner to get the most direct connection possible.

    Try to start your Nissan Altima while listening very closely to the sounds that it makes. If you hear a whirling noise followed by a clicking noise, there is a solid chance that you may have a starter problem. Remove the air cleaner with a screwdriver to gain access to the starter, and tap on it. This may engage the flywheel and start the car. Contact a mechanic about replacing the starter if this also fails. This is a fix that you may be able to make but can be challenging.

    Place the key into the ignition and try to turn it. If the key will not turn or gets jammed, you may have a broken ignition switch. Do not try to force the key. This could break the key off in the switch. Contact a mechanic about having the switch replaced.

How to Replace a Timing Belt on a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder

The Nissan Pathfinder is a sport utility vehicle in production since 1986. The 1996 model was the first of the second generation Pathfinders, which Nissan produced until 2004. Nissan introduced the VG33E engine with the 1996 Nissan Pathfinder, which is a six-cylinder, 3.3-liter engine with a single overhead camshaft. This engine has a timing belt to synchronize the movement of the crankshaft and camshaft. It is essential for the engine to be in the correct position when replacing the timing belt.

Instructions

    1

    Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal with a socket wrench. Remove the engine undercover and the radiator shroud. Disconnect the cooling fan assembly, including its pulleys. Drain the radiator and detach the radiator hose. Disconnect the radiator.

    Detach the drive belts for the power steering motor, air conditioner and alternator. Disconnect the spark plugs with a socket wrench, and remove the dust shield for the distributor. Detach the intake tube near the cover of the cylinder head. Disconnect the hose from the thermostat.

    Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt with a socket wrench and disconnect the pulley with a gear puller. Remove the front covers for the timing belt. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise to align the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket with the timing mark on the oil pump housing. Align the timing mark on the camshaft sprocket with the timing mark on the rear timing belt cover.

    Install the bolt for the crankshaft pulley bolt with a socket wrench. Turn the timing belt tensioner counterclockwise with a hexagon wrench to relieve the pressure on the timing belt, and remove the timing belt.

    Disconnect the covers for the cylinder heads with a socket wrench, and loosen the retaining bolts for the rocker arm shaft. Turn the timing belt tensioner clockwise with a hexagon wrench to tighten it. Tighten the locking nut for the tensioner to hold it in place.

    Install the timing belt onto the crankshaft and camshaft so that the arrow on the timing belt points toward the front timing belt covers. Align the white lines on the timing belt with the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft. Loosen the locking nut on the belt tensioner with a hex wrench to turn the tensioner about 75 degrees clockwise, and tighten the locking nut.

    Turn the crankshaft clockwise by several turns to seat the timing belt, and align the timing marks. Press timing belt between the camshaft sprocket and tensioner pulley with about 22 lbs. of force as you loosen the locking nut for the timing belt tensioner.

    Turn the crankshaft clockwise to advance the timing belt by about 2.5 teeth, and tighten the locking nut for the tensioner. Turn the crankshaft clockwise by several full turns and align the timing marks again.

    9

    Replace the front covers for the timing belt, and tighten their mounting bolts to 24 foot-pounds with a torque wrench. Install the crankshaft pulley onto its shaft, and torque its mounting bolt to between 90 and 98 foot-pounds. Attach the hose to the thermostat housing, and connect the air intake to the cylinder head cover.

    Connect the dust protector for the distributor with a socket wrench, and install the spark plugs. Attach the drive belts for the power steering motor, air conditioner and alternator. Connect the radiator and attach the hose from the water pump. Fill the radiator with coolant and replace the cooling fan assembly. Connect the undercover for the engine. Start the engine and correct any fluid leaks.
