How to Retrieve Codes for a 1991 Honda Accord

How to Retrieve Codes for a 1991 Honda Accord

You can retrieve the trouble codes on your 91 Honda Accord in home garage. The Accord comes standard with an On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) computer that stores trouble codes sent to it from sensors positioned throughout the vehicle when they detect a malfunction. They also keep track of the vehicles regular servicing needs. When the computer receives a code, it illuminates a warning or service light on the instrument panel. You can use a small handheld computerized device called an OBD scan tool to retrieve the codes to diagnose what is wrong with your vehicle. Scan tools are available at auto-parts retailers.

Instructions

    1

Find the trapezoidal-shaped data link connector (DLC) on the lower part of the drivers-side dash just left of the steering column. Plug the OBD scan tool into this DLC.

    2

Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "On/Off" position. Make sure you dont go past this point and crank the engine.

    3

Follow the directions on the screen of the scan tool to read the codes. Write down the codes on a piece of paper.

    4

Unplug the scan tool and turn off the vehicle. Look up the codes in the scan tools manual.

How to Retrieve My 1994 Nissan Pickup Trouble Codes

How to Retrieve My 1994 Nissan Pickup Trouble Codes

You can retrieve the trouble codes from your 94 Nissan pickup right from your home garage, saving yourself both time and money. 1994 Nissan pickups come equipped with an on-board diagnostics I computer (OBD I) that retrieves and stores all trouble codes sent to it from various sensors within the pickup. When these sensors detect a problem in the Nissan, they send the code to the computer. The computer illuminates service and warning lights on the instrument cluster. You can retrieve these codes using a handheld device called an OBD I code reader. This can be purchased online or at any auto parts retailer.

Instructions

    1

Locate the diagnostic port near the steering column on the underside of the drivers side dashboard. It will be the same size and shape as the connector on the OBD I code reader.

    2

Plug the code reader into this diagnostic port.

    3

Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "II" position, taking care not to start the engine.

    4

Wait for the code reader to turn on. Select the "Read Codes" command (or a similar command) on the face of the reader. Wait for the code reader to display the codes. Write down the codes it displays.

    5

Look up the meaning of the alphanumeric codes in the manual. Unplug the reader and perform the servicing or repairs the vehicle needs based on the information obtained from the codes.

How to Retrieve Codes for a Ford OBD 1

How to Retrieve Codes for a Ford OBD-1

Fords manufactured before 1996 come equipped with a first-generation On-Board Diagnostics computer (OBD-I) that retrieves and stores all error codes sent to it from various sensors throughout the vehicle. When these sensors detect a malfunction, they send the trouble code to the Fords computer, which turns on the vehicles warning and service lights. You can pull these codes right at home using a small device known as an OBD-I code reader, which you can purchase at any auto-parts retailer.

Instructions

    1

Locate the diagnostic port on the drivers-side dash near the steering column. The port will be the same size and shape as the connector end of the OBD-I code reader.

    2

Plug the code reader into the port.

    3

Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "II" position, but dont crank the engine.

    4

Wait for the code reader to power on. Some readers have to be turned on, so you may have to find the "on/off" switch.

    5

Select the command on the reader that says "Retrieve Codes" or something similar (the command will vary by brand). Wait while the code reader interfaces with the vehicles computer, then write the codes down on a piece of paper.

    6

Look up the codes in the scanner manual. Unplug the reader and have the vehicle serviced or repaired based on the diagnosis obtained from the codes you retrieved.

How to Retrieve the Trouble Code for a 1993 LS400 Engine

How to Retrieve the Trouble Code for a 1993 LS400 Engine

You can retrieve the trouble codes for your 1993 Lexus LS400 right from your home garage, saving yourself a trip to the mechanic. All you need is an OBD I scan tool, which is a hand-held computerized device that can be purchased from any auto parts store. This tool reads the trouble codes that are sent to the On-Board Diagnostics computer. These codes help you or your mechanic pinpoint the exact problem with the vehicle. Do not reset the computer until after you have had the vehicle serviced or repaired. Doing so could cause further damage to the Lexus.

Instructions

    1

Open the fuse panel cover using your fingers and pulling in a downward motion. The fuse panel cover can be found underneath the steering column.

    2

Find the port in the fuse panel and plug the OBD I scan tool into it. Dont force it in because the pins may bend. Just twist it around until it fits properly.

    3

Turn on the scan tool. Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "On" position. Dont crank the engine.

    4

Select "Clear" on the scan tool to reset the codes.

    5

Unplug the scan tool, replace the fuse panel cover and start the engine. Verify that all service and warning lights have shut off.
