How to Install an Electrical Oil Pressure Gauge

Electric oil pressure gauges are easy for a DIY-mechanic to install, whether replacing a faulty oil pressure gauge, or a custom, after-market look is desired. Oil pressure gauges are designed to inform the driver when the oil falls below a safe operating level, or when the oil pressure is too high. Driving a vehicle without an oil pressure gauge can lead to catastrophic engine failure. Most oil pressure gauges come with mounting panels and the necessary installation hardware. The necessary hardware can be purchased from an auto parts dealer, if not included with the oil pressure gauge.

    Choose a suitable location to mount the oil pressure gauge; mount the gauge so it is easily viewed while driving. Common mounting locations for aftermarket oil pressure gauges include under the dash, on top of the dash, or set into the dashboard.

    Mount the gauge panel to the dash with a screwdriver and screws provided in the kit; set the gauge aside. This makes it easier to connect the wires. If mounting the gauge in the dash, drill a hole in the dash 1/8-inch larger in diameter than the size of the gauge.

    Remove the oil drain plug from the oil pan with a wrench and drain the old oil into a oil catch pan. This is an opportune time to change the oil filter as well.

    Remove the old oil pressure sending unit with a ratchet and socket; the oil pressure sending unit is shaped like a cylinder and is usually located near the oil filter. Refer to the new oil pressure sending unit in the oil pressure gauge kit to help you identify the part.

    Connect the signal wire to the sending unit and run it through a grommet in the firewall in close proximity to the gauge. Run the wire through the gauge panel hole, or the pre-drilled hole in the dashboard, allowing extra wire for easy connecting.

    Connect the signal wire to the post on the back of the gauge. The gauge posts are marked for correct wire installation.

    Run a power supply wire from a switched 12-volt power supply, such as the cigarette lighter, dome light, radio, or fuel pump, to the power post on the gauge. The power supply must be switched to operate on and off with the ignition.

    Run a ground wire from the vehicle chassis to the ground post on the gauge; a poor ground can result in an inoperable gauge or false reading. Use an existing grommet in the firewall, or drill a hole in the body of the vehicle, and route the wire to the chassis or frame.

    Mount the gauge into the gauge panel, or the hole in the dash, with the supplied mounting hardware in the kit.

    Install the oil pan drain plug and fill the engine with oil.

    Start the engine to check the operation of the gauge.

Installation Instructions for a Fuel Pressure Regulator in a Civic

The Honda Civic is a line of subcompact and compact cars made by Honda since 1973. The models made from 2006 to 2010 are compacts with several choices of engines, most often a four-cylinder 1.8-liter engine. These vehicles use mult-port fuel injection, which requires a fuel pressure regulator to control the pressure in the fuel lines. The fuel pressure regulator in recent model Honda Civics is located under the rear seat and is part of the fuel tank unit.

Instructions

    1

    Open the filler cap for the fuel tank to relieve the pressure in the fuel tank. Remove the fuse for the fuel pump under the dashboard and start the engine. Allow the engine to run until it stalls and replace the fuse for the fuel pump. Disconnect the cable for the negative battery terminal with a socket wrench to prevent the discharge of fuel into the fuel system.

    Remove the cushion from the rear seat of the vehicle and pull the upper cross-member from the rear floor. Disconnect the retaining screws for the access panel with a socket wrench and remove the access panel. Detach the electrical connector from the fuel tank unit; release the quick-connect fittings from the fuel tank unit.

    Turn the locknut counterclockwise with Locknut Wrench 07AAA-SNAA100 to loosen the it. Remove the locknut from the fuel tank unit; detach the fuel tank unit from the fuel tank.

    Disconnect the bracket and O-ring from the fuel tank unit. Detach the fuel pressure regulator from the rest of the fuel tank unit and discard the O-ring.

    Lubricate the new O-rings with engine oil and mount the new O-ring onto the new fuel pressure regulator. Connect the bracket to the fuel pressure regulator. Align the marks on the fuel tank unit with those on the fuel tank unit and install the fuel tank unit.

    Mount the locknut onto the fuel tank unit. Turn the locknut clockwise with Locknut Wrench 07AAA-SNAA100 until it locks into place. Attach the quick-connect fittings and the electrical connectors for the fuel tank unit.

    7

    Replace the access panel and fasten its retaining screws with a socket wrench. Replace the upper cross-member in the rear floor and install the rear seat cushion. Connect the cable for the negative battery terminal.

How to Fit a Subaru Impreza Fuel Pressure Regulator

The Subaru Impreza is a compact car manufactured since 1993. The installation procedure for a fuel pressure regulator in an Impreza depends primarily on the engine. A late-model Impreza has several choices of engines, with the most common being a 4-cylinder 2.5-liter engine. The fuel pressure regulator for this engine is on the fuel rail next to the fuel injectors and is accessible from the top of the engine compartment.

Instructions

    1

    Detach the electrical connector from the fuel pump relay to disable the fuel pump. Start the engine and allow it to stall. Engage the starter for at least five seconds to ensure the fuel system is empty. Attach the electrical connector for the fuel pump relay.

    Remove the cable to the negative battery terminal with a socket wrench. This ensures you dont start the engine inadvertently while replacing the fuel pressure regulator. Detach the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator.

    Disconnect the nuts that attach the fuel line to the fuel pressure regulator with a socket wrench. Detach the fuel line and remove the clamp on the fuel pressure regulator. Disconnect the regulator and discard its O-ring.

    4

    Mount a new O-ring onto the new fuel pressure regulator and install the fuel pressure regulator. Attach the clamp and connect the fuel line to the fuel pressure regulator with a socket wrench. Attach the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator.

    5

    Connect the cable to the negative battery terminal with a socket wrench. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks.

How to Reset the Tire Pressure Monitoring System on New Wheels

Correct tire pressure is very important. If you dont check your air pressure, you could be driving on a low tire, which increases the odds of a blowout. Many accidents are caused by tire failure, and many tires that fail do so because of low air pressure. One fantastic new system available on most new cars is tire pressure monitoring, also known as TPMS. When youve installed a new tire, it is sometimes necessary to reset the system.

Instructions

    1

    Drive the car at freeway speeds for 50 miles. Many vehicles can be reset just by driving the car. If this does not work, move on to the next steps.

    Take out your TPMS scanner. Most of the scanners work in the same fashion. Become familiar with how your TPMS scanner works. Notice that the scanner has a menu button and a selector to select your model car. Select your car and follow the prompts on the screen to reset the TPMS units.

    Reset the tires on the car one by one. This will require you to walk around the car to each tire and push the reset button.

How to Replace the Fuel Pressure Regulator on a 2003 Suburban

The Suburban is a large sport utility vehicle. Chevy began building this popular model in 1935. Suburbans built since 2000 are similar to Chevrolets pickup trucks, except they have a station wagon body. The engine most commonly used in the 2003 Suburban is a 5.3-liter, eight-cylinder engine with sequential fuel injection. This engine requires a fuel pressure regulator to keep the pressure in the fuel lines within the correct range.

Instructions

    1

    Remove the cable from the negative battery terminal with a socket wrench to ensure that you dont start the engine inadvertently. Loosen the filler cap for the fuel tank to relieve the pressure in the fuel tank.

    Wrap a shop rag around the fuel pressure fitting on the fuel rail. Attach a fuel pressure gauge to the fitting and place the bleed hose for the pressure gauge into a container approved for storing gasoline. Open the pressure gauge valve and allow the fuel to drain into the container. Detach the fuel pressure gauge from the fuel pressure fitting.

    Disconnect the bolts on the upper manifold assembly with a socket wrench. Remove the upper manifold from the engine block. Detach the vacuum tube from the fuel pressure regulator.

    Release the snap ring retainer around fuel pressure regulator and remove the fuel pressure regulator assembly from the retainer. Discard the O-rings and fuel filter.

    5

    Lubricate the new O-rings with engine oil and mount them onto the fuel pressure regulator. Install the fuel pressure regulator into its retainer and engage the snap ring around the fuel pressure regulator.

    6

    Connect the vacuum tube to the fuel pressure regulator. Attach the upper manifold assembly with the mounting bolts by using a socket wrench. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

How to Test Electric Oil Pressure Gauges

Oil pressure in an engine is critical to proper operation and to avoiding irreparable damage to internal engine parts. Electric oil pressure gauges sense the oil pressure inside the engine, then transmit the pressure information to the gauge inside the vehicle. A malfunctioning oil pressure sensor may send erroneous information to the gauge. Test the sensor before you replace the gauge. The sensor screws into the engine block, which connects to the gauge by a wire that is routed through the firewall to the gauge on the dashboard.

Instructions

    Find the oil pressure specification for your model vehicle and engine size in your owners manual or a vehicle service manual for your car. Find the voltage and resistance parameters for the oil pressure sensing unit in your vehicles service manual.

    Disconnect the wires that attach to the oil pressure sensing unit. Its usually located on the bottom of the engine near the oil filter. Attach the multimeter that leads to the sensor and then start the vehicle. Check the multimeter and note the voltage and resistance reported by the multimeter.

    Turn off the vehicle and disconnect the multimeter. Connect the potentiometer to the oil pressure sensing unit by connecting one lead to the blue and white wire on the sensor and the other potentiometer connection to the ground connection on the frame.

    Set the potentiometer to the resistance (in ohms) as specified by your owners or service manual. Start the vehicle. Check the reading on the potentiometer and note the resistance. Turn off the vehicle, disconnect the potentiometer and reconnect the leads to the oil pressure sensor.

    Replace an oil pressure sending unit that returns values outside the acceptable range for your model vehicle. Replace the electronic oil pressure gauge if the sending unit tested within acceptable ranges.
