How to Tow a Honda Civic With a Dolly

There are many reasons to tow a Honda Civic on a tow dolly. A tow dolly is designed to pull a vehicle behind another vehicle with the idle wheels -- non-driving wheels -- on the the ground and the driving wheels off the ground. Some vehicles require a long process to prepare the vehicle for towing on a dolly. The Civic, however, has a very straightforward towing process when using a dolly and requires no special preparation.

Instructions

    1

    Park the tow dolly and the Civic on a flat surface. Position the Civic about 8 to 10 feet behind the rear of the dolly.

    2

    Grab the dollys ramps and pull them outward until they are fully extended and lay them on the ground.

    3

    Enter the Civic and start the ignition.

    4

    Place the vehicle in "Drive" for automatic or "First Gear" if operating a standard transmission and slowly drive towards the ramps, using your assistant to guide you.

    Continue driving up the ramps, with the guidance of your assistant.

    Stop the Civic when your guide tells you that you have reached the dollys platform, the area where the cars front wheels set in.

    7

    Place the Civic in "Neutral," set the parking brake, turn the ignition off and exit the Civic.

    Place the dollys ratcheting straps over the Civics wheels, as instructed in the dollys instructions. Tighten the straps using the ratchets until the vehicles front wheels are secure.

    Remove the key from the Civics ignition, place the Civics gear selector in "Park" if equipped with an automatic or "First" if equipped with a manual transmission and release the parking brake.

    Accelerate and stop slowly and evenly, as hard acceleration or braking can cause damage to the towing vehicle.

    Negotiate tight turns caully, as the tow dolly will take turns slightly tighter than the towing vehicle. Pay close attention to your side view mirrors when in tight turns.

How to Check a Civic for VTEC E

The VTEC-E is the single overhead-cam version of the Honda Civic VTEC engine, designed to increase fuel economy at low rpm. Only one of the two intake valves opens a very small amount at low rpm, increasing the fuel/air atomization in the cylinder, utilizing a leaner mixture. It is necessary for the technician to know if the Civic is equipped with a VTEC or a VTEC-E model engine when attempting to diagnose a problem. Identifying a VTEC-E requires little more than raising the hood and making a phone call.

Instructions

    1

    Pull the inside hood release, and lift the hood of the Honda Civic.

    2

    Find the engine model number engraving located toward the front of the engine just below the head gasket. Remove any grease or dirt that covers the engraving.

    3

    Read and record the engraving.

    4

    Contact the service department at a Honda dealer and ask a service representative to decode the engraved number to determine if the engine is a VETEC-E.

How to Replace the Boots on a Honda Civic

The tie-rod ball-joint boot on your Honda Civic is what keeps dust, dirt, and other contaminants out of the inside of the ball joint. This is important, because multipurpose grease for lubrication that needs to be kept free of dust is in the ball joint . However, these boots can become torn, cracked, or develop holes. When this happens, you need to replace the boots on your Honda Civic.

Instructions

    1

    Pull the boot off the tie-rod end. Wipe all of the old grease off of the ball joint with a clean rag.

    2

    Pack fresh, clean multipurpose grease into the lower area of the ball pin.

    3

    Fill the new boot with clean multipurpose grease. Ensure you have grease on the lip of the boot. Ensure no dust, dirt, or foreign matter gets into the grease.

    4

    Replace the new boot using the special tool 07QAD-P0A0100. Make sure there is no gap in the boot installation sections. Check the tapered section of the ball pin for grease, and wipe it away if any is present.

Installation Instructions for a Fuel Pressure Regulator in a Civic

The Honda Civic is a line of subcompact and compact cars made by Honda since 1973. The models made from 2006 to 2010 are compacts with several choices of engines, most often a four-cylinder 1.8-liter engine. These vehicles use mult-port fuel injection, which requires a fuel pressure regulator to control the pressure in the fuel lines. The fuel pressure regulator in recent model Honda Civics is located under the rear seat and is part of the fuel tank unit.

Instructions

    1

    Open the filler cap for the fuel tank to relieve the pressure in the fuel tank. Remove the fuse for the fuel pump under the dashboard and start the engine. Allow the engine to run until it stalls and replace the fuse for the fuel pump. Disconnect the cable for the negative battery terminal with a socket wrench to prevent the discharge of fuel into the fuel system.

    Remove the cushion from the rear seat of the vehicle and pull the upper cross-member from the rear floor. Disconnect the retaining screws for the access panel with a socket wrench and remove the access panel. Detach the electrical connector from the fuel tank unit; release the quick-connect fittings from the fuel tank unit.

    Turn the locknut counterclockwise with Locknut Wrench 07AAA-SNAA100 to loosen the it. Remove the locknut from the fuel tank unit; detach the fuel tank unit from the fuel tank.

    4

    Disconnect the bracket and O-ring from the fuel tank unit. Detach the fuel pressure regulator from the rest of the fuel tank unit and discard the O-ring.

    5

    Lubricate the new O-rings with engine oil and mount the new O-ring onto the new fuel pressure regulator. Connect the bracket to the fuel pressure regulator. Align the marks on the fuel tank unit with those on the fuel tank unit and install the fuel tank unit.

    6

    Mount the locknut onto the fuel tank unit. Turn the locknut clockwise with Locknut Wrench 07AAA-SNAA100 until it locks into place. Attach the quick-connect fittings and the electrical connectors for the fuel tank unit.

    7

    Replace the access panel and fasten its retaining screws with a socket wrench. Replace the upper cross-member in the rear floor and install the rear seat cushion. Connect the cable for the negative battery terminal.

How to Replace a Headlamp in a 2003 Honda Civic

Replacing a burnt-out bulb on your 2003 Honda Civic requires no tools or expert knowledge. Reference your owners manual for the specific replacement bulbs your vehicle requires.

Instructions

    1

    Remove the power steering fluid reservoir by pulling it up out of the holder. Set the reservoir on a stable surface to prevent the fluid from spilling. This step is only necessary on the drivers side headlamp.

    Locate the bulb and connector plugged into the back. Remove the electrical plug by pressing on the sides of the plug and pulling straight back.

    3

    Remove the headlight weather seal by pulling the tab located at the top of the headlamp enclosure.

    4

    Release the bulb retaining wire by locating the clip and pulling it down and away from the bulb. Pull the bulb out of the headlight assembly.

    5

    Insert the new bulb into headlight assembly. Ensure the bulb is properly aligned with the slots of the headlamp. Swing the retaining clip up onto the bulb, securing it in place.

    6

    Replace the weather seal by inserting it onto the socket with the word "Top" facing up. Ensure the seal is properly seated by running your hand around the edge of the weather seal. Failure to seat the seal fully will allow water into the enclosure, causing damage.

    7

    Connect the electrical plug to the new bulb by pushing it straight on. To verify proper attachment of the electrical connector, turn on the headlamps and observe that both headlights work.

    Reinstall the power steering reservoir on the drivers side and close the hood.

How to Check the Firing Order on a 93 Civic

There is a conductive metal rotor that spins inside the distributor cap of your 1993 Honda Civic. An electrical current feeds through the spinning rotor that contacts four separate posts inside the cap sending the current through the posts. The posts are attached to ignition wires which carry the current to the spark plugs. Each post is contacted at different times creating a firing order. If the firing order is off the engine will run poorly or not run at all. Check the firing order of your 1993 Honda Civic whenever a routine tune-up is performed.

Instructions

    1

    Open the hood of your civic to locate the distributor cap. The distributor is a small plastic cap with five large ignition wires coming out of the top. The distributor is installed on the passenger side of the engine block. The cap is installed horizontally and points toward the passenger side.

    2

    Walk to the passenger side of the car and look at the distributor cap face. There are four ignition wires installed around the edges of the cap face at approximately 2:30, 4:30, 7:30 and 10:30 as if on a clock. Take a piece of paper and pencil and draw a simple diagram. Label the wire installed at 2:30 as number four. Label the wire installed at 4:30 as number two, 7:30 as number one, and 10:30 as number three. The fifth wire installed in the center of the cap is irrelevant.

    Follow the four ignition wires to their other end. This is where the wires connect with the spark plugs on the engine block. Stand in front of the vehicle. Draw a separate diagram labeling the spark plugs in descending order from left to right. The left most spark plug, closest to the distributor cap is number four. The spark plug to the right of that is number three and then number two. The spark plug to the far right is number one.

    Use the two diagrams to make sure the ignition wires connect the terminals on the distributor cap with the corresponding spark plugs. The ignition wire connecting the number one distributor terminal and spark plug should be the longest wire in length. Wire number two should be the second longest with number four being the shortest wire.

    Start the engine to test the firing order. If installed properly, the engine should run smoothly and evenly, without skipping a cylinder. Turn off the engine immediately and re-examine the installation if the engine runs choppy.

Instructions

    Push in on the map light. Hold it in this position so that the seam between the map lights is more prominent.

    Insert the flat-head screwdriver into the seam between the map lights.

    Pry off the the map light cover. Use firm pressure but do not jerk or force the screwdriver to avoid breaking the plastic.

    4

    Remove the old bulb and replace it with a new one.

    5

    Reattach the light cover. Apply pressure with the palm of your hand until the cover snaps into place.

How to Replace the Lower Beam on a 2000 Honda Civic

The lower beam on the 2000 Honda Civic is integrated to the higher beam headlight unit. The single bulb houses dual filaments that account for each lower and higher beams. Unfortunately, when one filament burns out, replacing the headlight is required. The good news is, replacing the lower beam incorporates the same procedure as the high beam since it is the same bulb. The headlight beams on most all modern cars are halogen bulbs that can be compromised if touched with human skin. Alkaline oils in skin will create a weak spot on the bulb that will expedite its failure.

Instructions

    1

    Ensure the headlight switch inside the 2000 Honda Civic is in the off position and the engine is off. Open the hood.

    2

    Pull the power steering reservoir off of its retaining bracket (if replacing the drivers side headlight beams only--passenger side beams have open access). Support the reservoir in the engine compartment so it doesnt lay on its side or the reservoir will leak power steering fluid from its cover/cap.

    3

    Squeeze the sides of the wire harness connector to unlock the tab and pull the connector from the blades of the headlight beam.

    4

    Pull the rubber dust boot off the headlight beam. There are two pull tabs on the dust boot--one on top and one on the bottom.

    5

    Unclip the headlight beam retaining wire from its hold-down slot by pushing in on it and lifting the wire upward slightly away from the slot. Pivot the wire on its screw hinge and remove the headlight beam unit from the headlight assembly.

    6

    Put on gloves before handling the replacement 9003 automotive headlight beam to avoid touching the bulb with bare skin.

    7

    Align the three tabs on the base of the headlight beam with the three notches in the headlight assembly unit.

    8

    Hold the headlight beam in place and swing the retaining wire on its hinge against the back of the headlight. Press in on the wire and slightly down to clip it on the hold-down slot.

    9

    Press the dust boot back in position and then reattach the wire harness connector to the blades of the headlight beam. Replace the power steering steering reservoir on its bracket (if applicable).

    10

    Test the headlight beam by turning on the headlight switch before closing the hood.

How to Replace the O2 Sensor on a 2000 Honda Civic

Replacing the oxygen (O2) sensor in your 2000 Honda Civic can improve the vehicles idle, fuel economy and engine performance. The O2 sensor reads the percentage of oxygen in the exhaust gases as they exit the engine, then converts that information to milliamps--these are used by the engine management computer to adjust the air/fuel mix going into the engine. If a sensor fails, the engine will run very rough and even stall during driving.

Instructions

    1

    Raise the front of the car with a jack, then support the car on a set of jack stands. Slide under the car, just behind the front wheels, and locate the O2 sensor on the catalytic converter.

    2

    Disconnect the electrical connector on the O2 sensor pigtail from the connector on the main wiring harness by releasing the locking tab and separating the two halves. Place an O2 sensor socket on the sensor, then turn it counterclockwise with a ratchet, removing the sensor from the catalytic converter.

    3

    Insert a new O2 sensor into the threaded hole in the catalytic converter and turn it clockwise, using an O2 sensor socket and ratchet to tighten it. Connect the wiring harness connector on the car to the pigtail connector on the O2 sensor, pushing them together until the locking tab snaps in place.

    4

    Slide out from under the car, raise the car off the jack stands with a jack, then remove the stands from under the car. Lower the jack, setting the car on the ground, then remove the jack from under the car.
