How to Change a Voltage Regulator

The voltage regulator in your automobile controls the voltage in your electrical system, maintaining a constant current to run the electrical and electronic accessories in your car. It maintains a constant voltage of between 13 to 15 volts, depending on your automobile. The extra voltage above your batterys voltage, which is 12 volts, allows the battery to be recharged. There are two types of regulators, contained electronic regulators and contact point regulators. Unless you have a classic car, more than 25 years old, your regulator will be of the electronic variety and is either attached to your alternator or located remotely.

    Use a wrench to detach the cables from the battery. The battery is typically located under the hood, directly behind the grill of the automobile, on either the right or left side. It has two cables attached. Detach the positive cable first, it will be labeled with a "+" sign. Loosen the nut holding the cable by turning it counterclockwise. Remove the negative cable in the same way.

    Locate the voltage regulator. It is either in a black plastic box on the back of your alternator, which will be labeled on the belt diagram under the hood of your car or in line in the battery cable between the alternator and the battery. Consult a repair manual for your make and model for more specifics.

    Position the new regulator over the old for remote regulators, inline with the battery cable and not attached to the alternator and unplug each cable from the old regulator and plug it into the new regulator. There may be up to four cables, depending on the make and model. For cables attached with screws, loosen the screws by turning them counterclockwise with a screwdriver. Attach the cables by fitting them onto the corresponding screws on the new regulator. Tighten the screws with the screwdriver. For integrated regulators, those attached to the alternators, move directly to the next step.

    Remove the screws or bolts holding the regulator to the car frame, or alternator, using a wrench or screwdriver. The type of mounting hardware depends on the car model. Position the new regulator, aligning it with the holes on the alternator or car frame. Install the mounting screws through the holes in the new regulator and tighten them, by turning them clockwise.

    Replace the battery cables and tighten the cables with the wrench, making sure to attach each cable to the contact you removed it from, positive to positive and negative to negative.

Installation Instructions for a Fuel Pressure Regulator in a Civic

The Honda Civic is a line of subcompact and compact cars made by Honda since 1973. The models made from 2006 to 2010 are compacts with several choices of engines, most often a four-cylinder 1.8-liter engine. These vehicles use mult-port fuel injection, which requires a fuel pressure regulator to control the pressure in the fuel lines. The fuel pressure regulator in recent model Honda Civics is located under the rear seat and is part of the fuel tank unit.

Instructions

    1

    Open the filler cap for the fuel tank to relieve the pressure in the fuel tank. Remove the fuse for the fuel pump under the dashboard and start the engine. Allow the engine to run until it stalls and replace the fuse for the fuel pump. Disconnect the cable for the negative battery terminal with a socket wrench to prevent the discharge of fuel into the fuel system.

    Remove the cushion from the rear seat of the vehicle and pull the upper cross-member from the rear floor. Disconnect the retaining screws for the access panel with a socket wrench and remove the access panel. Detach the electrical connector from the fuel tank unit; release the quick-connect fittings from the fuel tank unit.

    Turn the locknut counterclockwise with Locknut Wrench 07AAA-SNAA100 to loosen the it. Remove the locknut from the fuel tank unit; detach the fuel tank unit from the fuel tank.

    Disconnect the bracket and O-ring from the fuel tank unit. Detach the fuel pressure regulator from the rest of the fuel tank unit and discard the O-ring.

    Lubricate the new O-rings with engine oil and mount the new O-ring onto the new fuel pressure regulator. Connect the bracket to the fuel pressure regulator. Align the marks on the fuel tank unit with those on the fuel tank unit and install the fuel tank unit.

    Mount the locknut onto the fuel tank unit. Turn the locknut clockwise with Locknut Wrench 07AAA-SNAA100 until it locks into place. Attach the quick-connect fittings and the electrical connectors for the fuel tank unit.

    Replace the access panel and fasten its retaining screws with a socket wrench. Replace the upper cross-member in the rear floor and install the rear seat cushion. Connect the cable for the negative battery terminal.

How to Fit a Subaru Impreza Fuel Pressure Regulator

The Subaru Impreza is a compact car manufactured since 1993. The installation procedure for a fuel pressure regulator in an Impreza depends primarily on the engine. A late-model Impreza has several choices of engines, with the most common being a 4-cylinder 2.5-liter engine. The fuel pressure regulator for this engine is on the fuel rail next to the fuel injectors and is accessible from the top of the engine compartment.

Instructions

    1

    Detach the electrical connector from the fuel pump relay to disable the fuel pump. Start the engine and allow it to stall. Engage the starter for at least five seconds to ensure the fuel system is empty. Attach the electrical connector for the fuel pump relay.

    Remove the cable to the negative battery terminal with a socket wrench. This ensures you dont start the engine inadvertently while replacing the fuel pressure regulator. Detach the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator.

    3

    Disconnect the nuts that attach the fuel line to the fuel pressure regulator with a socket wrench. Detach the fuel line and remove the clamp on the fuel pressure regulator. Disconnect the regulator and discard its O-ring.

    Mount a new O-ring onto the new fuel pressure regulator and install the fuel pressure regulator. Attach the clamp and connect the fuel line to the fuel pressure regulator with a socket wrench. Attach the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator.

    5

    Connect the cable to the negative battery terminal with a socket wrench. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks.

Pontiac Bonneville Window Regulator Installation

The Pontiac Bonneville has a window regulator in each of its four doors in order to open and close the windows. Since mechanical items always break sooner or later, if you own your Bonneville long enough youll eventually face a window regulator replacement job. While this isnt the easiest repair a Pontiac owner will meet, its not the hardest either. If you have basic mechanical repair skills and an hour of time on your hands, you can install a new window regulator in a Pontiac Bonneville.

Instructions

    1

    Remove the Bonnevilles window and lock switch plate from the door panel using the trim tool. Unplug each switch from the wiring harness by hand and place them aside.

    Remove the screws holding the Bonnevilles door panel to the door skin using the Phillips screwdriver. Pry the door panel trim pins loose with the trim tool by inserting the head of the tool between the door panel and door, then working your way around the perimeter until youve freed each of the pins from their anchor holes.

    3

    Remove the door panel from the door by lifting up on it until it clears the lower edge of the window frame and then moving it away from the door.

    4

    Lift the Bonnevilles window to its full height by hand. Tape it to the top of the door with packing tape to give you clear access to the regulators mounting bolts.

    5

    Remove the two bolts holding the regulator to the window, the two bolts holding the regulator to the door and the single bolt holding the window motor to the regulator using the socket set.

    Remove the Bonnevilles window regulator by hand. Position the new regulator and bolt it in place. Remove the packing tape and then reinstall the door panel in reverse of how you removed it.

How to Replace a Voltage Regulator

The voltage regulator ensures a consistent charging voltage from the alternator to your cars battery. A faulty regulator often results in a dead or damaged battery. Generally, manufacturers equip cars with some type of warning system to notify owners of a regulator problem. When you see the warning light on the dash, consult a professional unless you have some auto repair experience. If you do the repair yourself, review repair instructions for your specific car before replacing your voltage regulator. Depending on the manufacturer, you may have to perform different steps.

Instructions

    1

    Put on the work gloves, and open the hood. Take the ground cable off of the battery.

    Remove the wires from the broken regulator. Bind the end of the battery wire with electrical tape. This avoids any potential sparks that might occur if the wire rubs any metal parts. detach the regulator from the alternator by removing the adhering bolts or screws with the adjustable wrench or screwdriver.

    Look at the bottom of the regulator for the two carbon brushes. Remove them and use the sandpaper to carefully clean the contact ends of the brushes. Apply electrical contact cleaner to the brushes, and insert them into the new regulator. Match the wear patterns on the brushes to the patterns on the new regulator. If the patterns do not match, the regulator will not work correctly.

    Connect the new voltage regulator to the alternator carefully, making sure not to damage the brushes. Secure the regulator with the bolts or screws and attach the wires using the adjustable wrench or screwdriver, Reattach the ground cable to the battery and close the hood.

    Start your car, and run it at 1,000 to 1,200 rpm. Look at the voltmeter on your dashboard to check the battery voltage. If voltage is not in the 13.5 to 14.5 range, read your regulator instructions on how to adjust the voltage. Recheck it after you make the adjustments.

How to Replace a Power Window Regulator in a 1993 F 150

Ford offered a power window regulator as optional equipment in the 1993 F-150 trucks. The power window regulator replaces the manual window crank with an electric motor controlled by switches on the door trim panel. Failure of the power window regulator can occur over time because of poor lubrication that increases friction within the system. The friction leads to an increased load and insulation breakdown within the motor. Bad motors are not serviceable and must be replaced to restore power window function.

Instructions

    1

    Remove the power window control retainer screw from the window control and door lock switch housing, using a Phillips screwdriver. Carefully separate the window control housing from the door trim panel enough to gain access to the underside of the housing. Do not pull the housing any farther than necessary or you risk damaging the electrical connections at the control.

    Remove the three screws holding the window control and door lock switch, and the wiring in place under the control housing. Pull the housing off the controls. Feed the wiring and controls back through the control opening in the door trim panel.

    3

    Locate the door trim pushpin on the trailing edge of the door trim panel toward the bottom. Carefully pry out the center button of the pushpin a short distance using a small flat-head screwdriver to disengage the pin, then pull the pin body out of the panel.

    4

    Remove the screw located within the armrest pull using a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the screw from the top forward area of the trim panel using a Phillips screwdriver.

    Remove the upper door trim panel from the door. Remove the five screws from the bottom of the lower door trim panel and map compartment using a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the lower trim panel from the door if the truck has the two-piece Lo-Series trim panel.

    Remove the four screws from the bottom of the trim panel using a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the panel from the door if the truck has the one-piece Hi-Series trim panel.

    Carefully peel the plastic water shield off the inner door panel. Place the water shield aside, adhesive-side up, in a safe place where the adhesive will not become contaminated with dust or grit.

    Disconnect the window motor power supply wire from the wiring harness within the door.

    Locate the drill dimples in the inner door panel over the two unexposed motor drive retaining screws. Check behind the dimples and make certain there are no wires in line with the dimples. Drill a hole through each of the drill dimples using a 1/2-inch drill bit and drill motor. Remove the motor retaining screws through the two drilled holes and the other existing hole over the motor drive unit using a ratchet, extension and socket.

    Push the motor drive unit away from the inner door panel to disengage it from the window regulator arm. Push the window to the full up position and prop it in place using a short wooden dowel. Remove the old motor from the door.

    Install the new motor in the door and engage it with the window regulator. Tighten the motor retaining screws to 50 to 85 inch-pounds using an inch-pound torque wrench, extension and socket.

    Apply two, 1-inch square pieces of pressure-sensitive waterproof tape over the drilled holes in the inner door panel.

    Connect the window motor power supply wire to the wiring harness. Remove the window prop dowel. Actuate the window motor using the window control, and check for full window operation.

    Inspect the door drain holes located at the bottom of the door; make certain they are open and free of debris.

    15

    Install the plastic water shield on the inner door panel. Make certain the adhesive holds the shield firmly in place around the access hole in the inner door panel.

    16

    Install the lower door trim panel and panel screws on two-piece Lo-Series door trim panels. Feed the power window control and door lock switch through its hole in the upper door trim panel, and engage the upper panel with the lower panel. Install the upper door trim panel screws.

    Feed the power window control and door lock switch through its hole in the one-piece Hi-Series door trim panel, then install the door trim panel screws.

    18

    Insert the door trim pushpin body in its hole in the panel. Push the center button of the pushpin in to expand the pin and engage it in the inner door panel.

    Install the window control and door lock switch in its housing and install the three control-to-housing screws using a Phillips screwdriver. Install the housing on the door trim panel and install the housing retaining screw.

How to Replace the Fuel Pressure Regulator on a 2003 Suburban

The Suburban is a large sport utility vehicle. Chevy began building this popular model in 1935. Suburbans built since 2000 are similar to Chevrolets pickup trucks, except they have a station wagon body. The engine most commonly used in the 2003 Suburban is a 5.3-liter, eight-cylinder engine with sequential fuel injection. This engine requires a fuel pressure regulator to keep the pressure in the fuel lines within the correct range.

Instructions

    1

    Remove the cable from the negative battery terminal with a socket wrench to ensure that you dont start the engine inadvertently. Loosen the filler cap for the fuel tank to relieve the pressure in the fuel tank.

    2

    Wrap a shop rag around the fuel pressure fitting on the fuel rail. Attach a fuel pressure gauge to the fitting and place the bleed hose for the pressure gauge into a container approved for storing gasoline. Open the pressure gauge valve and allow the fuel to drain into the container. Detach the fuel pressure gauge from the fuel pressure fitting.

    Disconnect the bolts on the upper manifold assembly with a socket wrench. Remove the upper manifold from the engine block. Detach the vacuum tube from the fuel pressure regulator.

    4

    Release the snap ring retainer around fuel pressure regulator and remove the fuel pressure regulator assembly from the retainer. Discard the O-rings and fuel filter.

    5

    Lubricate the new O-rings with engine oil and mount them onto the fuel pressure regulator. Install the fuel pressure regulator into its retainer and engage the snap ring around the fuel pressure regulator.

    6

    Connect the vacuum tube to the fuel pressure regulator. Attach the upper manifold assembly with the mounting bolts by using a socket wrench. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
