When you are close enough to your Mercedes vehicle with your SmartKey, you can push the button located on the door handle and your doors will lock and/or unlock automatically. If your SmartKey is not working, there are several do-it-yourself repairs available to repair your SmartKey you can try before contacting your Mercedes-Benz dealer for an appointment.

Instructions

    1

Replace the battery in your SmartKey. Purchase a new battery at any auto parts store or any authorized Mercedes-Benz dealership. Open the SmartKey fob using a sharp object, such as a butter knife, and trade out the dead battery for the new battery. Test the SmartKey remote.

    2

Repair a SmartKey that no longer starts your cars engine by turning off all of the non-essential functions in your car, such as lights, the radio and the heated seats, then try to start the ignition. Jump-start your car if this does not work and contact your Mercedes-Benz service department for a repair appointment.

    3

Pull the door handle of your Mercedes and turn your SmartKey to the second position in the ignition. Use this method if you cannot lock or unlock your car with the remote.

    4

Contact Mercedes-Benz. The Mercedes-Benz website allows you to enter your zip code to find the dealership nearest your location.

    5

Explain that your key fob is not working correctly. Be as specific about the problem as you can. For example: tell the dealership if your key fob only works when you are unlocking your doors and not for anything else. The more specific you are, the better Mercedes can diagnose your fobs issue.

    6

Attempt to fix your key fob if the mechanic at Mercedes tells you to try any self-diagnostics on the fob. Sometimes the mechanic recognizes the problem without ever seeing the fob, based on your description of the problem and will walk you through the repair process. If he or she cannot, youll need to take your key to Mercedes for repair.

    7

Take your key to Mercedes if self-diagnostics you tried on your own and/or that the mechanic advised you to try do not work. From this point the process is up to Mercedes, such as how long you need to wait, whether or not your fob is fixable or youll need to order a new one and how much the repair/replacement will cost you.

How to Replace a Key for a 2005 Honda Pilot

The 2005 Honda Pilot comes with special keys that include a built-in key fob for remotely locking and unlocking the vehicle. To work properly, each key fob has to be programmed to match a unique vehicle. The key part must be custom cut by a locksmith or dealer as the cutting is not the same as older Hondas and cant be cut by a traditional key-cutting machine. Blank Pilot keys are available through dealers or some auto parts suppliers.

Instructions

Replacing the Key Through a Dealership

    1

Contact a Honda dealership parts department and ask for a replacement key.

    2

Provide to the dealership the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and proof of ownership. The dealership will cut and program the replacement key to work with your vehicle.

    3

Test the new key and fob to make sure it works properly with your Pilot.

Replacing the Key Through an Auto Parts Supplier

Purchase a replacement key from a parts supplier. Make sure the supplier provides programming instructions with the key in case the key has any nonstandard programming steps. How to Get Another Key for a 1990 Honda Prelude

Maybe youve lost the key to your Honda Prelude, your key no longer works correctly or you just want to have a spare key on hand. Obtaining a new car key, even for an older model vehicle, is not difficult. Honda vehicles are equipped with key codes that are personalized for each individual vehicle. As long as you can provide the vehicle identification number (VIN), which contains the key code for your 1990 Prelude, to a professional key maker, you can obtain a new key.

Instructions

    1

Locate the vehicle identification number (VIN) on your 1990 Honda Prelude. You can find this number in the original purchase paperwork, on the title or on your insurance information. It is also located on the doorjamb on the drivers side and is visible only when the door is open.

    2

Call your local Honda service department or a professional locksmith to order a new car key. If you call Honda, you will have to pick up your key when it is ready whereas a locksmith might come to you.

    3

Provide your VIN to the Honda service department or locksmith. This number will allow the service technician or locksmith to read the key code for your car and cut the key correctly.

    4

Provide proof that you are the owner of the vehicle for which you are requesting a new key. You will need to show the Honda service department or the locksmith your photo identification and proof of ownership such as the vehicle registration, insurance card, or purchase paperwork with your name on it. You can then pay for your new key.

How to Find a Key off Battery Draw

How to Find a Key off Battery Draw

Sometimes its easy to figure out why your battery is dead because you left the lights on, or accidentally bumped an interior light as you got out and it went unnoticed. But, after the car is jumped and the battery dies again, its clear that you need a new battery or something else is drawing off the battery even when the car is off. Replacing the battery wont fix the problem if your car has a parasitic battery drain. Rather than a costly trip to the mechanic, find the source of the problem yourself with a multimeter, also known as an ammeter.

Instructions

    1

Charge your car battery if your car doesnt start. Otherwise proceed to step 3.

    2

Let the car sit for at least 20 minutes after recharging the battery so the engine, lights and fuses will be cool.

    3

Turn off the radio, unplug any devices from the lighter socket like phone chargers or GPS units.

    4

Pop the hood. Remove the keys from the ignition. Check that all interior and exterior lights are off. Get out of the car and shut your door. Check that all the other doors are shut securely.

    5

Connect the meter to your cars battery per the manufacturers instructions. Once the meter is in series with the post and clamp, the display will show the current draw from the battery. Now, its time to go searching for the root of the problem.

    6

Pop the trunk. Touch the interior light. If the light is hot or warm, that means the light is staying on even when the trunk is closed.

    7

Open the glove box. Touch the interior light. If the light is hot or warm, that means the light is staying on even when the box is closed.

    8

Pull fuses methodically until you see the number displayed on the meter drop. This means youve found the source of the drain. Put each fuse back in the right socket after pulling it if you found the number didnt go down.
