How to Install a Brake Control Box on a 91 Chevy

Chevrolet vehicles made in 1991 typically have an anti-lock braking system, or ABS, to improve the vehicles braking ability during an emergency stop. An electronic brake control module, or EBCM, monitors the rotation speed of each wheel. The EBCM decreases the braking force to a wheel when it detects that the wheel is rotating more slowly than the other wheels. The procedure for installing the EBCM is generally the same among many Chevrolet cars made from 1982 to 1994.

Instructions

    1

    Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal with a socket wrench. An electrical discharge from the battery can damage the EBCM when you remove it.

    Unplug the electrical connectors from the EBCM. The EBCM is a small, box-like component mounted to the dash panel on the drivers side. It typically has two electrical connectors.

    Remove the three hex head screws from the EBCM with a hex wrench. Detach the EBCM from the dash panel. Remove it from the vehicle.

    Align the holes in the grommets on the new EBCM with the corresponding holes in the dash panel. Hold the EBCM to the dash panel.

    Attach the hex head screws to the EBCM with a hex wrench. Torque the screws to 17 pound-feet with a torque wrench.

    Attach the electrical connectors to the EBCM and connect the cable for the negative battery terminal with a socket wrench.

How to Turn Off the Traction Control Light in a 2001 Jaguar 4 0

An illuminated traction control light in a 2001 Jaguar 4.0 is an indication that the ABS computer detects a problem with the traction control or anti-lock braking system. This could represent a current problem or a previous problem that has yet to be cleared from the ABS computers memory. An illuminated traction control light will remain on until the ABS computers memory is cleared and reset. In order to clear the computers memory and turn off the traction control light, a connection must be established between the ABS computer and an automotive scan tool. Once a connection is established, the memory can be cleared and the light will turn off automatically.

Instructions

    1

    Rotate the ignition switch to the OFF position in order to turn off the engine.

    Locate the Jaguars diagnostic communications interface port, or DCIP. The DCIP is mounted just out of side, underneath the dashboard, below the steering wheel. The port has 16 connection pins and is the male end that connects to the female end of the scan tool.

    Connect the female end of the scan tool to the male DCIP and turn the ignition switch to the ON position, then power on the scan tool.

    Enter the make, model and year of your vehicle when prompted by the scan tool. Search the menus using the navigation keys on the scan tool and enter the ABS computer menu. Choose the option to read the trouble codes from the ABS computers memory. Write down the trouble codes that display on the screen. These alphanumeric codes have a very high diagnostic value and can explain why the code was triggered, should the light re-illuminate once the codes are cleared.

    Choose the option to clear the codes from the computers memory. Once the memory is clear, the scan tool will indicate this on the main screen. Disconnect the tool and start the Jaguars engine. Confirm that the traction control light is now off.

How to Install Brake Control on a Trailblazer

The Electronic Brake Control Module, or EBCM, on a Chevrolet Trailblazer controls the vehicles braking during an emergency stop by preventing the wheels from locking. The procedure for installing an EBCM is generally the same for all Trailblazers, and requires a scan tool to program the EBCM.

Instructions

    1

    Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench.

    2

    Clean the EBCM and surrounding area with a cloth to avoid contaminating the EBCM. The EBCM on a Trailblazer is under the vehicle on the drivers side next to the drive shaft. It is on top of the block that is connected to the brake lines.

    Unplug the electrical connector from the EBCM, and remove the mounting screws for with a T-25 Torx tool. Detach the EBCM from the Brake Pressure Modulator Valve, or BPMV. Discard the mounting screws for the EBCM.

    Wipe the BPMV clean with a shop cloth. Fasten the new EBCM to the BPMV with new mounting screws by using the T-25 Torx tool. Tighten the mounting screws in an X-pattern to 39 inch-pounds.

    Connect the electrical wiring harness for the EBCM. Reconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench.

    Take the vehicle to a dealer to program the EBCM. This generally involves connecting a scan tool to the vehicle and performing the tire size calibration function.

How to Control When the TCC Engages on a 3T40

The torque converter clutch (TCC) is controlled by a small solenoid valve on a GM 3T40, a three-speed transmission. The TCC kicks in when the engine is in third gear. It allows the engine to reduce its revolutions per minute while still maintaining speed. It is a version of the "overdrive" in older transmissions. Most of this control is done by an on-board computer that you cannot adjust. But there is one simple cable adjustment you can perform yourself to change when the TCC engages.

Instructions

    1

    Check the transmission fluid under the hood. If it is low, fill it to the required mark.

    Grab a large cable that passes over the left side of the engines air intake. It should be beside the place that states the engines cubic inches in bold letters on top of the valve covers.

    Slide your fingers around a large button connector where the cable turns and begins to turn down. Push the button on the side of the connector. When you find the button, place a small C-clamp around the connector and button to hold the button closed.

    Pull on the cable slightly to release the tension. Remove the C-clamp. Reach down past the bracket that holds the cable and grab the throttle valve. It is spring-loaded nut behind the bracket. Pull back on it slightly with your fingers. If you cant pull hard enough on it, slip a 1/2-inch wrench over it and pull on it and the wrench together, but do not turn the wrench. Just use if for leverage.

    Pull on the cable until it makes several clicking sounds as it adjusts. Release the nut.
