How to Install Navigation Lights on a Boat
Boating is a very popular activity. For legal reasons many boats must have the correct lighting system. This enables other boats to clearly see you, helping you to avoid accidents. You can purchase navigation lights from electronics stores. Consult your boats manual to determine the correct type of lights. Installing the lights is a fairly simple process that you can complete in a few minutes. Do not travel out to sea at night until the lights are correctly fitted.
Instructions
- 1
Make two 1/32-inch holes in the gunwales for two side markers and two bow lights, using a portable drill. Drill a 3/32-inch hole where you want each of your marker lights to be. This will allow you to feed the cables under the gunwale.
2Run conductor wire underneath the gunwale, Attach mounting clips to the gunwale at three-foot intervals. Place the wire in the mounting clips to secure it in place.
3Place the wire along the port side under the gunwale. Feed the wires for the red bow light to the middle of the boat and the wires for the green bow light to the starboard side.
4Strip both the negative and positive wires and attach them together. Solder them together using a soldering iron, and wrap them in electrical tape.
5Attach the circuit to the last light and attach the battery terminal located in the stern to the free wire ends. Turn on the engine to test the navigation lights before fixing the circuit in place to ensure they work correctly.
