How to Repair Scratched Car Rims

A scratch to the rim of a tire can ruin the appearance of a vehicle, especially if the scratch is noticeable. It is not always possible to purchase new rims, as when money is tight or the cost makes new rims not worth buying. Instead of buying new rims, it is possible to fix the scratch in the rims and prevent further damage.

Instructions

    1

Wash the tires. Basic soap and water with a soft sponge is fine to wash the tires and rims. Remove all of the dirt so that it will not interfere with repairs.

    2

Put masking tape on the tire. Cover the area around the scratched part of the rims to prevent getting anything on the tires directly.

    3

Sand the scratch with a 240 grit sandpaper. Apply putty and sand again with the 240 grit paper.

    4

Sand the area with 400 grit sandpaper. Stand until the putty is smooth. The putty should feel smooth and flat.

    5

Apply the primer. The primer helps seal in the scratch and putty. Allow the primer to dry and lightly sand it with 400 grit sandpaper.

    6

Apply a thin coat of the silver lacquer. The silver lacquer should be matched to the color of the rim and cover up the putty. The exact method to apply the lacquer will depend on the brand and type purchased. Be careful not to paint the tires.

    7

Use paint thinner to remove lacquer that gets in the wrong locations.

    8

Apply the clear lacquer. This adds shine and a silvery appearance to the rim. Allow this to dry overnight for optimal results before driving the vehicle.
