C4 Transmission Identification

C4 Transmission Identification

Built from 1964 through 1981, Fords C4 transmission served as the main two-speed automatic transmission without overdrive the company used in both cars and trucks. You can easily identify it using sight and other general techniques, as well as Ford part numbers.

General Identification

Identify the C4 transmission using visuals and measurements. It measures between 17 and 18 inches long and has a removable bell housing. The bottom pan is rectangular, almost square, and measures 10 by 9 inches. A C4 also has 11 bolts and a slight bulge on the front pass.

Year Identification

For an easy way to identify the year, check the transmission identification tag---usually located on the passenger side. The tag identifies the transmission and year; it may have disappeared, however, in which case youll need to identify the Ford part number. Since Ford stamped this number on different locations, look for a series of numbers and letters, usually four to five digits long---for example, D7SP. This number translates as a 1977 model; the "D" represents the decade manufactured (in this case, the 1970s).

Other Considerations

The C4 has undergone improvement modifications throughout its production life. In 1970, Ford enlarged the C4s input shaft and front hub from 24 to 26 splines, increasing the input shaft diameter. By counting these splines, you can identify the earlier C4s from the 1970 and later models. This adjustment also made these input shafts and torque converters non-interchangeable with the older models. 1970 and later models also came with either 157- or 164-tooth bell housings.
