Lug Nut Problems

Every vehicle, from a passenger car to a large semi-truck, uses lug nuts. But, when the wheels have a problem, the lug nuts are among the first thing to be checked and adjusted.

Identification

Lug nuts are the large, threaded covers that hold each vehicle wheel to the axle. Depending on the vehicles manufacturer, there can be four to six lug nuts for each wheel.

Considerations

A loose lug nut can result in a wobbling wheel. Tire tread and balance of the wheel is compromised if the lug nut is loose. Verify the proper torque of the lug nuts in the owners manual or with a dealer.

Significance

Lug nuts can be over-torqued as well. If they are too tight, they can warp the brake rotor or break the studs, leading to a costly repair. Lubrication should not be applied to lug nuts or their studs to prevent improper torque.
